ZEV FAVORITE. AS TIME NEARS FOR RACE CLASSIC In Spite of Sentiment, the Betting Machines Will Tell the Cold-Blooded Story of Form and Class. * By FRANK GETTY, United Press Staff Correspondent. LATONIA RACE TRACK. Kv., Nov. 2.—Zev arrived this morning to defend his title as champion 3-year-old of 1923 against the fastest of his challengers. The Sinclair colt, which will start tomorrow against My Own, In Memoriam. Rialto and Taylor Hay. a presumptuous youngster who was entered at the last minute with his equine betters, came through the trip from New York without a scratch.
The triumphant son of The Finn bids fair to carry more money than any of his other rivals. My Own. the challenger. or In Memoriam. western colt, about which less is''. kjjqwn. Rialto and Taylor Hay will be long shots. Machines Will Tell Zev was expected at noon today. The Sinclair colt is not as popular, perhaps, as his record warrants, but the pari-mutuel machines will record opinion rather than sentiment on the morrow. There was something coldly lmpreasiive about the way Zev on the eve of the most important race of his career, stopped to pick up a paltry $5,000 at Empire City. The Raneocas stable is already within $13,000 of the world'3 record for money won by a single stable during a single year—5397,342 garnered by the late Pames M. Keen’s horses In 1907. It wants but this victory to put the stable earnings in a class by themselves. Zev’s Winnings As for Zev, the colt has won 000 already, and the $50,000 purse tomorrow. If he can snatch it from his fleet rivals, will put him ahead, on total earnlng3, of any thorough bred that ever strode, save one. Ksar. the French champion, holds the world’s record for money won. with $320,000 to his credit. Earl Weideman. Kentucky brewer, has his horse. In Memoriam. in the championship tomorrow and from Bob Malmoran, the colt's trainer, down to the lowliest saddle polisher, the stable is outspokenly sure their horse Is going to beat both of the easterners. Few horsemen write Rialto altogether out of it. There will be seven events on the card tomorrow. Post time has been moved up and the feature event, the Latonia Championship, may start at .7:30 p. m.

Official Entry By United Press EATON IA RACE TRACK, Ky., Nov. 2. —Five hor3es were named today to start Saturday in the $50,000 Latonia championship. The four expected to be named —Zev, My Own, In Memorium and Rialto—were entered, but there was a surprise when C. W. Hay also entered the colt Taylor Hay. Taylor Hay never has shown any form which entitled him to run in such company and it is believed he was entered merely for sentimental reasons. C. W. Hay is a steward at Latonia.

EASTERN ELEVENS 10 FIGHT IT OUT IN 01 SECTION No Inter-Sectional Affairs — Undefeated Teams Clash for Supremacy, By WESTBROOK PEGLER Uni i eu News Stuff Correspondent NEW YORK, Nov. 2.—in the Eastern zone, the college boys who feed on raw bull beef throughout the week and enjoy trouble on Saturdays, will confine their assaults to fellow Easterners this Saturday, to the exclusion of Southern and Western teams. This will be the first football day of the season for which the schedule provides no inter-sectional game. However, on Tuesday, Rutgers, whoso red Jersies at least are animated by a real football team, will try to make election day a deplorable occasion for the West Virginia hill people at the Polo Grounds. A Big .Saturday Saturday’s games will be a sort of stock-taking for the entire eastern region. The comparisons available now are very obscure and some reputations. notably Harvard's and the Navy's have been badly scuffed Yale, which meets the Army at New Haven Saturday afternoon. Is one of the seven prominent teams of the East which have not been defeated The others are Cornell, with the season's high-scoring record to date of 187 points In, four games, Dartmouth, which beat Harvard; Syracuse, Tufts, Washington and Jeffereon and Penn State. This week, the big game will be the one between Cornell and Dartmouth, whereby anew Dartmouth Stadium at. Hanover, N. H., will be consecrated to the sportive practice of trampling one's fellow man Into the mud. Lafayette-W. and J. The old rivalry between Lafayette and Washington and Jefferson Is as warm as ever, but the game in New York Saturday will prove nothing. Lafayette has been beaten by Pitt and tied by Rutgers, so a victory will confer no title on Wash.-Jeff. Yale must beat the Army to remain In the fight for the Eastern championship. Penn and Pittsburgh are matched at Philadelphia. Princeton meets Swßrthmore, beaten by Penn. Harvard plays Tufts which won from Middiebury and Penn State plays. Syracuse. Another clashing of unde seated teams.
HOOSIER HARRIERS TO RONSATORDAY There are eighteen entries in the A. A. U. cross-country run scheduled Just before the Butler-De Pauw freshman game at Irwin field Saturday. Brlghtwood Trims Y. P. C. The Brig'ntwood Independents won from the St. Anthony Y. P. C., 24 to 23. Thursday night at St. Anthony’s Hall. The passing game of the winners, and the shooting of Hon and Brown, featured the game. Next Thursday night the Y. P. C.s will play the Indianapolis Highlands on the home floor.

‘Expert’ Picks Manual He Bets a Nickel on Griddle Battle for Old Times' Sake.
By WALTER SCAMP SHIS bein the day when 2 city hi schools which Is Manual and Take-a-nickel are to meat on the griddle, it ought to be a excellent time to pick out a winner. Personally i have bet a nickel on the Red and White 11. That beln because E. H. K. McComb alloud me to git by with a parchment after 5 and one hf. yrs. at that school. But as to possibilities: It looks like It tvas a even throw. Last yr. the dopesters all give Tech a two to 1 od and then was all het up because the fly was In there ointment box. I herd there will be a hot four quarter bout between the lines, because both of ’em have a lot of punch. Kornblum and Hicks, which, by the way. he ain’t, are the Green gards. The ticket cellars is expecting a big crowd. It’s going to be a tough, tight, tumbly, tussle. I?ut as 1 said, lot the winner have the honors. RENAULT IB MADE FAVCRITETONIGHT Dempsey’s Sparring Partner Picked to Whip Johnson, By United Netcs NEW YORK, Nov. 2.—For some occult reason, Jack Dempsey s sparring partner, Renault, has been made the favorite in tonight’s bout in such bets as have been made and so probably will be whipped, as the favorites have been beaten In most bouts thus fax In the Indoor season. Johnson has not worked very well in training. He was absent from the ring a long time after being knocked out by Jess Willard and didn’t spend his time moping alone in the wilderness, either. If he should lose to Renault, who is regarded as no better than a second rater at present, Johnson will be definitely retired from the front group In the heavyweight class. Finley K.
