His object in a number of sword debates is Norm a Talmadge as the beautiful Yoelande* De Breux. Our hero in the case Is n(tne other than Conway Tearle cast ;as Rupert De Vrieac. When theset two men get their long swords in action somebody is bound to get more Ihan a friendly' Jab. The pretty maidens isf the sixteenth century were generally’ present when gentlemen of standing and otherwise used their swords. After seeing “Ashes tf>f Vengeance” ycu will agree with mjp that family feuds did not originate In the hills of Kentucky. “Ashes” fells the story of a feud \existing betwe en two families of France. Instead 1 of playing football, the men of b oth families were trained to use a sword with effect. Bill Shakespeare,, had such a feud In “Romeo and Jul|eft.” Such a theme, but not so sad, recited by IT. B. Somerville In “Asthes of Vengeance’.” The story' Is historical and probably paints an accurate picture of certain conditions in filie sixteenth century. I have the hunch that JS'orma took great delight in doing tills costume play. It has been moq nted on a large scale. Hundreds of! are uesd in unfolding the stoi y. The director does not let the smenery and the costumes “walk away*” with the story. He knew when to ffd&y up an Incident and the incident generally svas a fight with swords. “Ashes of Vengeance” js a splendid argument why Norma is just the person to play' Juliet in a i ilm version f the noted love tragedy. lam not ready to say that “Ashes” is the greatest movie in which iNorma has ippeared, but I do contend that she establishes herself as t|ie leading tmotional and dramatic p’fciyer which he screen reflects today. It belongs o one of Norma's best p bo to plays. The work of Miss Talm adge. Beery | tnd Tearle will linger in your mempry. Then he showers her with gifts and money. But he begins to wonder if it really pays. Later he finds that he has been cheated and that his gifts eventually are used to benefit another man. The crisis of the story approaches and the man is eventually restored to his faithful wife and family. But the vampire and her lover still have their troubles, which brings us back to the question asked in the title of the play. “Does It Pay?” We believe that this question is satisfactorily answered in the conclusion. There is little doqbt about the value of the lesson, but will It ever be learned? Miss Hampton has a good role in this production. She wears some beautiful gowns. She has an average supporting cast, including Harry Thurman, Robert T. Haines, who has the masculine lead; Florence Short, Walter Petri, Peggy Shaw, Claude Brook, Roland Bottomley and Marie Shot well. A comedy, news reel and “Fun From the Press” complete the bill. John Gilbert Plays Lead in "The Exiles.” A story of misdirected justice through the zeal of a district attorney is told in “The Exiles,” a movie made from a story by Richard Harding Davis. John Gilbert has the leading role in this photoplay which is on view at the Isis the first half of the week. His energetic prosecution of a girl charged with murder results in her conviction although she Is innocent. The murderer confesses after the convicted girl had escaped and fled to Tangiers. The district attorney is conscience stricken and he follows the girl for the purpose of persuading her to return to America. When the attorney sees that his viewpoint of life is wrong, the story rapidly draws to a satisfactory ending. (By Observer.)

The Indiana Chemical Research Laboratories, 1405 National City Bank Bldg., has solved the anthracite coal situation, to a telegram sent by officials of the oiganization to President Ooolidge. The company proposes to utilize waste vegetable products in manufacture of a substitute for anthracite. The product would save consumers twentyfive per cent in heat expense, and incidentally conserve fifty per cent of the bituminous coal, the telegram states. Fifteen per cent of the cars used in coal transportation would be available for other purposes, it is said. Officials of the company are Virgil A. Smith, president; W. F. Cleary, secretary-treasurer. Among a party of harvest-workers who recently went to Canada, were three clergymen, many ex officers and lads straight from school.
