MORPHINE HIDDEN IN ‘BOOK’ CURIO IS HELD BY U. S. Curiosity Shop at Dead Letter Office Receives Everything, By FLORA G. ORR. WASHINGTON, Oct. 16.—“And if ou care for reading, here's a good book by St. John Irvine.” Superintendent Dalzell of the dead ietter office was showing me about 'he parcel post rooms. • The book he held in his hand was ailed "Changing Winds.” When I opened it I found a neat hole cut through the pages right in the center of the book. In rhe hole was a bottle of morphine. It had gone through the mails as a “book.” The one to whom it was sent had not called for it at "general deliver?'.” The return address was fictitious. “Changing Winds,” with Its interesting cargo, is kept in a safe with t he other narcotics, moonshine, pistols, blackjacks and firearms. Asa curiosity shop the dead letter office admits of no superior. Garden tools, automobile parts, tires, hats, musical instruments, ribbons, cotton goods, watches anti jewelry of all kinds, dishes, silverware —everything you can think of —is there. Suit Case Ruse Worked I saw about 300 suit cases, probabiy containing laundry. “You see what Jimmie’s laundry that he sends home to mother when he doesn’t address it right,” laughed Dalzell. “You don’t sell those suit cases full of soled clothes when you have the dead-letter sales do you?” I asked. “Oh yes,” sair Mr. Dalzell. “Once in a New York sale a man kept bidding on a lot of these suit cases until he got them. We followed him to see what on earth he was going to do with them. “He hadn’t had them in his Seventh Ave. store very long before he put out a sign ‘Abandoned Hotel Baggage.’ When the crowd collected, he shrugged his shoulders and said he had bought them up at different hotels In the city. He didn't know what was in them. “Finally somebody offered $5 for one of the suitcases. Everybody crowded around to see what the ‘starter’ got. This suitcase was full of wonderful Armenian laces. "Wild, Wild/Wives” “These laces hadn't been there when the dead-letter sale was held, eo draw your own conclusion. Os course after that the suitcases went like hot cakes.” Dalzell and I picked up a bunch of "dead letters” that had jras: come in. We found two manuscripts, wrongly addressed by the writers. One was a movie-scenario entitled, “Twisted Paths of Passion.” The other was a short-story called “Wild, Wild Wives.” In the Washington office alone 24,000 letters and packages come to the morgue of the postofflce department every day. In the course of one year, about 80,000 letters with perfectly blank envelopes come in—no address or return address either.
DEATH CROSSINGS BEING CONDEMNED IN MANY STATES One-Third Over U, S. Roads Will Be Eliminated by Engineers, / By C. A. RANDAU WASHINGTON. Oct. 15.—-Uncle Bara i figrhtim? a winning battle apalnst grade crossings. Death sentences against 214 dangerous railway croseiners in thirty-five States are now being carried out. The bureau of public roads, is the Government's executioner. Over one-third of the crossings on all roads now being rebuilt with the aid of Federal funds are being eliminated. These include practically all of the more dangerous crossings. At the same time plans are being made for the gradual elimination of even a greater proportion of the crossings on all Federal aid roads. The total number of grade cross ings in the United State* has been estimated at 50,000. Os these probably 10,000 are located on much traveled roads. Before even the latter can all be eliminated, the States of the Union will have to adopt legislation empowering road-builders to construct bridges over railways, dig tunnels under tracks, and cross adjacent privately-owned property regardless of the wishes of railway companies and landowners. Avoidance Often Ooetly In carrying out its activities, the bureau of public roads has found that sometimes the avoidance of a single crossing involves costs aggregating SIOO,OOO. From this as a maximum, the coat drops down to as low as $5,000 or $lO,000 for a bridge across a railway cut or a tunnel under a graded track. The more expensive projects often involve several mlle of difficult road building and the purchase of expensive land. One of the most successful ways of avoiding grade crossings, the bureau found, is achieved by simply staying on one side of a railway. Recently in reconstructing nine miles of highway in Virginia, the Federal engineers eliminated all six of the grade crossings which had formerly made the road, wending its way back and forth over the right-of-way, a veritable nightmare for motorists. One-third, Aim Now In Alabama, a 25-mile stretch of road crossed the railway 14 times. By a piece of excellent engineering. 13 of these crossings were eliminated and the one remaining is not danger•us. All grade crossings cannot be elimi-

Wysong. nated without greater financial outlay than either the states or the railways can now afford, say officials of the bureau of roads.. Confronted with this reality, the Bureau has adopted as its policy the avoidance of grade crossings wherever practicable. In figures, this means one out of every' three crossings, and FILLER
