Adaptability of One-Floor Homes to Needs of Sm all Family Shown by Moore Residence on Maple Road

he ease with which a one-floor house may be kept Is no doubt one of the reasons for Its popularity, and one that has led to the superior arrangement that has been achieved In the planning cf It. A splendid example of this better cottage type Is the newly-built home of Mr. and Mrs. W H Moore, 412 W. Maple Rd. The house is built of
POSSIBILITIES OF 1 BRICK STRUCTURES ! INCREASE DAILY Homes of Permanent Materials Can Now Be Made Very Attractive, Artistic possibilities of the use of brick have Increased very rapidly j during the last few years. Today a | brick house may have an individuality all Its own—one that is distinctively different and that expresses a wonderi ful combination of the practical and I artistic. The durability of brick has never been questioned. The oldest residences In the country were built of brick and many are still habitable. The old objections to somberness and dampness have been entirely eliminated. The brick houses now are Inviting and cheerfully Interesting and as free from dampness as a house of frame. W. W. Wise, brick contractor, 206 Indiana Trust building, reports that he past season has seen mors brick houses under construction than ever >efore. Not only have there been more put up, but they have been more varied In character. Different I colors have been put out from time ! to time until It Is possible to obtain i almost any shade. These shades of brick are often set with different colored mortars and a i still greater variety of oolor has been made possible. The care with which bricks are set Is responsible for much of the attractiveness of the completed Job. The selection of the bricks with thought given to their uniformity and perfection of finish. Is also of vital Importance. NOW IS THE TIME FOR ALL INSIDE PAINTING Interior Work Can Be Done Without Hampering Outside Forces. It Is often almost miraculous to notice the rejuvenating faculties of a little paint The exterior of a frame house is vory largely dependent upon the choice of paint for Its power to attract, and the Interior Is not free from Its beautifying effect. C. E. Utley, manager of the Marion Paint Company. Is urging all who have Interior work to take care of it during the coming season when It- 1s Impossible to do outside painting. It is very urgent that only the very best paints be used for the inferior grades will stand up well. If paints are Improperly mixed they will check, soalo or blister, making an unsightly job In a little while Great care should be given to the style with which the paint Is applied —the lines of the house may be brought out to their very best advantage by the proper application. Comfortable and attractive, the living room is quite large, extending across the entire front of the house. white siding with the porch walls of l.rlck In shades of yellow and buff and is elevated a considerable distance above the street, giving It a certain amount of seclusion. The deep porch which extends across the front, not only makes It more interesting from an architectural standpoint, but adds much to Its comfort. Entrance Into Living Room There Is absolutely no waste space In this little house or no halls or passage ways. The front door opens directly Into the large living room. Realizing that most of the family’s time Is spent In this room, the house has been designed with the Idea of making It as comfortable and attractive as possible and the general plan of the room and Its furnishings contribute to the very successful result. Instead of the usual fiieplaoe, a deep window seat has besn placed In the west end, with book shelves of ample dimensions on either side. The neat Is recessed to considerable depth and the wall shows this recession In the shape of an arch over the seat. Upholstered furniture of attractive coloring and design Is used along with colorful lamps and floor rug. Shades of brown are found In the polychrome celling and wall lights. ‘Covered Wagon’ to Be Held Over at English’s
By special arrangement "The Covered Wagon" will continue next week at English'*. The engagement was originally intended for one week, but owing to the fact that many people have been unable to procure seats, the booking has been extended. No picture ever presented In Indianapolis has caused more favorable comment than this Inspiring plcturlzatlon of Emerson Hough’s great story of pioneer days. It Is wholesomely oloan. and while there is abundance of romance In the story, It's principal appeal lies In the virility of the characters. Matinee performances will be given every day, Including Sunday, and It Is suggested by the management that all those who are In a position to do so will secure seats for the matinee performances and thereby avoid waiting In the long line that nightly forma In front of the box office. Neat week will positively be the last opportunity of seeing “The Covered Wagon” at any theater in this city for another year at least, Ad Miller, manager of English’*, stated today. + + •!• Walman’s Bond Tops New mil at Palace “Harry Walman and his Seven Debutatnes,” sometimes known as W&lman’s Band, is ths chief attraction at the Palace on the new bill opening today. The dining room shows an extensive use of paneling with builtin combination buffet and china closet. the house were supplied by the Hatfield Electric Compand. As In most of the better homes built today, the builder used red gum for the woodwork, which shows up to a wonderful advantage In the dining room because of the lower wall paneling. A built-in buffet on the east side of the room further displays the love ilness of the wood. Linen drawers with glass door china closets furnish plenty of room for all dining needs. The walls of the kitchen are finished in steel gray with French gray woodwork. A breakfast alcove connected by open wall arch adds to the attractiveness and convenience of the room. A back entry provides places for the Ice chest and passageway to basement, which is wonderfully complete. A large laundry room with tuhs easily accessible; rain water connexion and drains and gas plate. Is as convenient and complete as possible. There Is also a 1 trge furnace room with coal bins entirely separated from the rest of the basement. Attractive Bedrooms The plan of the home calls for two bedrooms which are located on the east aide with connecting bath. Both bedrooms are decorated in pastel colored paper of attractive pattern. GEM HELPS ALL HOUSEWIVES TO DOJMNE Compound Polishes and Cleans in the Same Operation —Inexpensive, The houses of today have • greater window.apace than those built at any other time In the history of the United States. Plenty of air and light are factors that are not to be neglected and the window arrangement is the natural means of oaring for the essential*. However, windows are never attractive unless they are bright and clear and free from dust and dirt. It Is very difficult In a city where there Is so much coal smoke and dirt to have windows a* clean and shining as housewives desire. Various compounds have been marketed with the idea of making the task of window cleaning as easy as possible and to minimize time and effort. One of the moat effective of such compounds la that of tha Gem Polish Company, which serves as a cleaner and polisher. Thla cleaner and polish. In cake form. Is applied with a wet sponge. This cleaner Is then rubbed over and off the window with a dry cloth, leaving the surface as clean and bright as It Is possible for glass to be. There Is no duit sediment from the cleaners nor does It mar the woodwork. The cake form makes It easy to use and prevents wastage. The cleaner Is Inexpensive and lasting. The ease with which It may be used and its small coat have caused large institutions to use It exclusively. T. H. Whitehead la manager of tbe company, whteh haa offices In the Marion building.
BLOCK PRODUCTION BEINGBEASED Gibraltar Company Is Anticipating Spring Needs Early. Too often it has been the experience cf plants engaged in production of building materials to slacken their work during the winter season, onijr to find a shortage exists when spring needs are encountered. This condition not only hurts the building industry but curtails the profits of the individual plants, so each year managers are doing all they can to eliminate this condition. The Gibraltar Cement Block Company, Eagle Creek and Morris Bt., is one of the concerns that has taken care of this problem for the onoomlng winter. New maohlnery has been added, additional storage provided, and this year the plant win be able to produce at capacity throughout the entire winter season. This year at the opening of the spring season, contractors were held up because it was impossible to get enough concrete blocks to take oars
