171 ARRESTED IN DAK AND VICE - RAIDSOF POLICE Woman Tries to End Life by Drinking Poison —Will Recover, Turnkeys at police headquarters were kept on the run over the weekend. One hundred and forty-nine men and twenty-two women were arrested In raids. Forty-three axe held on charges of vagrancy. Samuel Reynolds 34, of 1555 Sheldon St., is charged with being the game keeper in a barn loft in the rear of the city hall. Thirteen men were arrested. Lieutenant Hudson and squad arrested Lee Warner, 28, proprietor of a poolroom at 2659 Shelby St., on a charge of keeping a gaming house. Four men are charged with gaming. Frank Benton, 3031 S. Meridian St., is charged with interfering with an officer. Edward White, colored. 45, of 1214 E. Sixteenth St., is charged with being a game keeper and seven colored men with gaming. Six colored men were arrested at 1536 E. Sixteenth St., and charged with gaming. Woman Drinks Poison Mary Turk. 40. of 948 N. Haugh St., was arrested by Lieutenant Corrigan and Patrolman Eldridge who said they found a still at her home. Seven women and eight men *are also charged with operating blind tigers. One woman attempted to take her life when arrested in a raid on 307 W. New York St. Kennard Plummer, Junction City, Ky., reported he was robbed of S6O there. Lillian Hayes, 40, of 120 W. Michigan St., is charged with robbery, grand larceny and a statutory offense. Belle Streby, 46, of 307 W. New York St., is charged with keeping a house and Viola Stoffer, 18, of 611 N. Delaware St., with a statutory charge. Plummer and William Glrton, 23. of 225 S. Meridian St., are both charged with associating. Miss Streby, who drank poison when the raid took place, was treated by the city hospital ambulance doctor and pronounced out of danger. Excursionists Robbed Several colored excursionists to Decatur, 111., complained of being robbed on the return trip. Sergt. Harry Nagelsion arrested John Rowan, colored, 25, of 315 Osage St., on a vagrancy charge pending investigation. Joseph P. Aton, 31, colored, of 1518 Lawton St.; Samuel Stock. 33, of 1721 Spruce St., and T. J. Galilvan, 36. of 710 N. Illinois St., were arrested on charges of assault and battery after a free-for-all fight at 1518 Lawton St.
SLAIN CONVICTS DEFIANT! DEATH Messages From Trio Found by Storming Party, Bu Timm Special EDDYVILLE, Ky., Oct. B.—The trio of besieged convict slayers, found dead in their fortified mess hall fortress by a storming party late Saturday, left messages of defiance to their besiegers. A note from Monte Walters to his wife, former Newcastle (Ind.) girl, who admits aiding in smuggling guns to the ; trio, read: "Love to you, beloved. I j am wounded and surrounded by guards. Good-by. I know you will ‘ be ” Death apparently stayed the: hand of the writer before the message was completed. A pencil-scrawled message written on the back of a wooden bench and signed Lawrence Griffith, read: “Remember you did not kill us all; killed ourselves.” \ “Defiants (defiance) from the dead!” read another message. Walters and Ferland, two of the convicts, were buried at the priso n while the body of Griffiths is held foi relatives. The three convicts held off State militia for eighty-one hours after mak * ing a dash for liberty, in which they \ killed three prison guards. Sol Schloss, newly elected president of the National Association of Retail Clothiers and Furnishers, was honor guest at a banquet of the Men’s Apparel Club at the Lincoln Sunday night. ‘Loving Robber' Takes $45 .John Apelige, 500 W. Court St., was hugged out of $45, on the street Sunday night, police say he says. Alice Jackson, 21, colored. Fayette St., was identified as the “loving robber,” according to police. Apelige said as he came out of a picture show a woman put her arms around him. Then he missed his pocket book. Burglar Leaves Footprints Footprints on a bed spread were the only clew to a burglar at the home of Christ Demetros, 336 N. Bright Sunday night. General Haller, the polish national hero, coming to America to attend the national convention of the American Legion, will visit Culver Nov. 4. Polish residents of South Bend and Mishawaka and the Calumet district will be invited here to greet him. Empty Report, Rich Discovery While searching for a prowler reported in the yard of Mrs. N. Haines. 1635 N. Delaware St., Saturday, police found an attempt had been made, by drilling holes in to enter the garage of Mrs. John Titus, 1629 N. Delaware St. Three five-gallon cans of grain alcohol and two sets of license plates were found. Police are searching for the man who rented the garage from Mrs. Titus.

BANKRUPTCY WILL BEFOUGHTTO END/ NI’BRIDEASSERTS Pollings Receiver Comments • Upon Goodrich Statement. Federal investigations of possible criminal actions by heads of the various R. L. Dolllings Company interests will not “pushed,” but they will not be opposed, Bert Mcßride, receiver for the Indiana Dollings interests, said today in commenting on the statement of James P. Goodrich, former Governor, that every one knowing responsible for the losses of Indiana citizens should be senate jail. The Goodrich statement was made in a speech at Winchester. Saturday. The former Governor criticised Ed Jackson, secretary of State and head of the State securities commission, and Andrew J. Simth, secretary of the Indiana Bankers Association for their indorsement of the Dollings Companies. “I will fight any bankruptcy proceedings, however,” Mcßride said. "Once it goes into bankruptcy, the factories suspend operations, and all chance of reorganization and payment of stockholders goes overboard.” Mcßride will attend a meetlhg of creditors of the Hugro Manufacturing Company, Warsaw, Ind., in Cleveland Wednesday with a view of reorganizing the company and selling a SIOO,000 bond issue to permit operation. “Other subsidaries will be reorganized, and preferred stockholders get some money back,” he said. “It will not be 100 per cent.” Road Petitions Are Denied The State tax board today denied petitions for $71,600 in bonds for four roads in Kosciuske County. The roads: Emmanuel Dubbs road, Van Buren Township, $16,300; James H. Stinson Road. Washington Township, $22,000; John M. Stinson road, Washington Township. $22,600; William E. Sumney road, Plain Township. $10,700.
