POLITICAL GOSSIP RIFE OVER HARVEY, CHILD REMAINS Reports of Friction Give Rise to Talk of Successors for European Posts. By United Xctc* WASHINGTON, Oct. s.—Announcement at the State Department that Col. George Harvey is soon to quit as ambassador to Great Britain and that Richard Washburn Child is about to resign his post at Rome, started the political pot boiling at the capital. Harvey is returning Nov. 1 and will resign Jan. 1. Child has left Rome for the United States on leave and has also indicated desire to be relieved Jan. 1. When reports of friction between Harvey and Secretary of State Hughes were current some months ago, Paul D. Cravath of New York, Hughes’ Law partner, was mentioned a possible successor to Harvey. Others likely to be considered for the two posts are John Hays Hammond, until recently chairman of the United States Coal Commission; Frank W. Stearns, Boston merchant and personal friend of President Coolidge, and Charles B. Warren, former ambassador to Japan. Both Harvey and Child informed President Harding last spring they wished to retire for personal reasohs. They found the lavish style of Europe’s royal courts too much for their salaries of $17,500. But these bread and butter reasons failed to check the torrent of political speculation. Whether Harvey will hitch his wagon to the Coolidge star is the outstanding question here. He has a record for picking winners. Child was a valuable aide to President Harding at Marion, but whether ho will care to devote himself to similar work in the coming campaign is uncertain. “Balloon Tires” Subject “Balloon Tires” will be discussed by J. E. Hale of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company at the first meeting of the season of the Society of Automotive Engineers, Thursday night at the Severin. A moving picture will illustrate the subject. Dinner will be sevred at 6:30, with the meeting at 8. Cue and Knife Are Weapons Chris Mello, 35, proprietor of a poolroom at 446 W. Washingtn St., and Elza Clemmons, 27, of 103 N. Bloomington St., are charged with assault and battery and the latter with intoxication, following a fight. Police say a knife and billiard cue were weapons.

A Puzzle a Day In the Japanese flag shown above, the dark circle, which represents the sun, has been mysteriously shifted from Its correct position In the center of the flag (dotted circle) to its present position. The strange behavior of the flag was probably caused either by the earthquake In Japan or by the recent total eclipse of the sun, but how it happened has nothing to do with the puzzle. The problem is how to put the circle back where it belongs. It can be accomplished by cutting the flag into two pieces, and refitting them together. Can you do It? YESTERDAY’S ANSWER The word In the following verse is “heroine.” My seven letters mark me as a wornman; (heroine) Remove the latter four I still am she.
