FIVE GIRLS FACE CHARGES IN PROSE /)F STORE THEFTS Bxjlice Allege Ring Operated / Through Employed Members in Shoplifting, With the arrest of four young women and with the fifth held in the detention home, officials of the Quigley-Hyland detective agency, 4uS National City Bank Bldg., who made the arrest declared a series of interstore thefts amounting to several hundred dollars has been cleared up. Nellie Moon, 20, of 506 S. Marion Ave., is charged with grand larceny. Ida Danforth, 2-0. Duella Danforth, 18. and a younger sister, all living at 723 E. Sixty-Third St., and Delta Schaller, 18, of 326 E. Henry St., are charged with receiving stolen goods. According to the detectives. Miss Moon, who was employed at the PetDry Goods Store in the linen fine arts department, included in small purchases made by the Misses Danforth high priced pillow slips, tablecloths and other linens which they took to their home and divided with the Moon girl later. Some of the articles were traded for candy to the Schaller girl, employed at the Kresge store. All of the girls at one time worked at Kxesge’s, detectives said. Ward, on trial for the murder of Clarence Peters, rested its case without any testimony when court convened today. THREE PRISONERS IN JAIL U. S. Orders Suspect Held as Two Confess “King” Charge. Three Chicago men. alleged booze runnenrs, captured a police squad headed by Mayor Shank Monday, were in jail today under orders of the Federal Governm*ni. The three, Jacob Fortish, Joseph Mango and John Sadler, were taken before Charles W. Moores. United States commissioner. Tuesday on charges of violating the Federal prohibition law. • Fortish and Mango waived arraignment and were placed under bond of ?2,000 each. Sadler’s hearing will be Friday. His bond is $2,500. Fortish and Mango said Sadler hired them to transport alcohol from Chicago to Indianapolis and they were to be paid S6O a week, they said, according to officers.
SHOOTING VICTIM DIES Alleged Quarrel With Man Results in Murder Charge. Mary Cave, .colored, 27, of 214 W. Merrill St., died at the city hospital at 3:30 a. m. toady of bullet wounds in the abdomen, alleged to have been inflicted Sept. 18, by Sam Terry, colored, 28, of 212(£ W. Merrill St., j after what police say was an alter- j cation over a love affair. Terry who was arrested Sept. 19, and charged with assault and battery with intent to kill, and confined in the county jail, was reslated today and charged with murder. Walb, Lagrange, Republican State chairman, has tendered his resignation to Governor McCray as a member of the State board of registration for professional land surveyors and engineers. The resignation will be effective Sept. 30. Walb said he had been contemplating resigning for some time. 1925 Convention Is Sought Efforts to bring the 1925 national convention of the Eaptist Young Peo pie’s Societies to Indianapolis will be made by the Central Baptist Association, it was announced at the annuail meeting of the association Tuesday. Hickman of the Trinity Methodist Church. Terre Haute, in observance of his fiftieth anniversary’ in the ministry. Bishop Frederick D. Leete, Indianapolis, head of the Indiana Methodist area, presided. Bishop Leete was to deliver a devotional address today. The afternoon session will be devoted to conference business and a report of district superintendents. POLICE TO PROBE SHOOTINGREPORT 'Target Made of House on Three Occasions,’ Detectives today began an investigation of the report made by Basil Booher, 3134 W. Michigan St., who states that on three different occasions recently bullets have been fired into his home. Labor Day, two bullets were found in his front door w’hen he returned home. On Sept. 15, tw r o more were fired inco the side of the house and Sunday three bullets pierced the roof of his home. Booher was arrested July’ 12 and charged with assault and battery with intent to kill, when he was alleged to have cut Robert Patterson, 23, of 338 N. Holmes Ave., arid Harry Smock, 334 N. Holmes Ave., after an argument at a social at 379 N. Warman Ave. on the lawn of St. Anthony’s Church, police reports show. The case was tried in city court and Booher was bound over to the grand jury. COMMODITY RATE PLANJS FOUGHT Cancellation Announcement Would ‘lnjure’ State, R. B. Coapstick, traffic manager of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, was in Chicago today consulting with railroad officials in a final effort to save commodity’ rates for shipments of Indiana furniture manufacturers. Representatives of manufacturers also attended. The Central Indiana Freight Association recently announced cancellation of commodity rates. Two petitions, seeking to protect Interests of Indiana iron, steel and brick manufacturers, were filed Tuesday with the public service commission by the Staet chamber.
