The soft tones of yellow bricks interspersed with chocolate brown compose the walls of the newly-built home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward A. Rink. 4133 Central Ave. The unusual effect brought about by the use of colored bricks has taken away all tne stereotyped appearance a brick house often has.
A pretty shade of green was chosen for the tile root and cream-colored wood trimming is effectively used for all window sills and cornices. A cement walk leads to the porch and another walk leads from the main walk to the driveway that extends past the south side of the house back to the garage. Deep, Broad Porch The porch, interesting because of its unusual depth, extends across the front of the house and furnishes a most pleasant rendezvous for pleasant hours. The door from the porch opens into the expansive living room, which runs the width of the house. When one enters this room the eye catches the cheer of the fireplace, which is admirably located in the north end of the room, with broad
VONNEGUT STOCK HAS MANY THINGS IN BUILDING LINE Hardware and Home Accessory Supplies of Quality Found in Abundance. Keeping abreast of building activities In Indianapolis with a stock of building hardware, roofing, wall and plaster board and other building material an,d rendering helpful and efficient service to contractors, architects and prospective builders has been the problem of Carl J. Prinzler, manager of the building hardware department of the Vonnegut Hardware Company. This department contains everything in hardware that would go into any building, and is known as a model ail over the country for the manner in which displays of different articles are handled. Everything Is shown as near the way it would be if installed from the simplest metal hinge to the finest metal doors, representing the finest wood finishes. Few people realize the importance of hardware to a home. "Good hardware adds to the beauty and value of any dwelling,” said Mr. Prinzler,” and the men in the department thoroughly know the building game and are ever ready to give advice in the selection of proper hardware. "Quality counts as much here as it does in any other line and practically every nationally known article of quality can be found in oUr stocks, including Stanley Garage Hardware, Burton-Dixie Compartment Mattresses, Bird & Son Neponset Roofing, and wall board, flaxlinum insulating material, Kolstad built-in mail boxes, Murphy In-A-Door Beds and Ironing boards.” One of the new features of this department is the complete display of In-A-Door Beds and ironing boards, which has recently been completed. MONEY AND PLANS FURNISHED IN ONE Building Corporation Relieves Builder of Many Worries. \ Much time and money to say nothing of energy and patience is often needlessly wasted in the construction of a house because the owners have attempted to plan the house themselves without the aid of experienced men. It takes a very technical knowledge to draw a set of plans that will be artistic, economical of time, space arid money and at the same time be livable. The Indiana Builders Corporation, 506 Guaranty Bldg., takes care of all the detail incident to building. All of this is done in such a way as to incorporate the ideas of the owners. The plans under which this corporation builds are varied enough to suit practically any type of builder. If a customer owns a lot, the company builds on the lot to suit the customer. The old home will be taken In at an agreed price and applied on the expense of the new and the client may occupy the old house until the completion of the new. "We build the home,” said Archie Kimmlck, nresident. "relieving you of all worry in connection with financing. Our many pleased customers Is ajguarantee of good workmanship and fair dealing.” “The home of E. A. Rink, described elsewhere on this page, is an example of the houses that we are putting up in the better residential sections. We have never built homes to sell. We have always adhered strictly to our policy of building homes to the order
of yellow and brown bricks. 3. The dining room, furnished in walnut, combines beauty and dignity. a 4. The breakfast room is built with china closets utilizing the space on the west wall.
from the living room. The lustre of the beautifully finished woodwork of gumwood convincingly illustrates the advantage this wood is enjoying. A note of dignity in the room is achieved through lovely silver table service that rests on the buffet. Across the room from the buffet and below the windows is a built-in china closet with deep shelves. The hand-decorated light bowl hung low over the table lends an attractive bit of color. From the dining room, access Is gained to the hall onto which opens the three bedrooms and bath. The bedrooms, well lighted and attractively decorated, have been artistically furnished. Very pretty appointments are used In the bedroom across .he hall from the dining room.
PLUMBING, HEATING INSTALLATION IS SCIENTIFIC IRK F. E. Trosky Points to These Things as Being of Great Importance, Every day new inventions are made and are utilized in various ways in the business and social world. Labor-sav-ing devices haVe been developed until the modern home of today Is a wonderful example of the achievement of inventions and perfected improvements for use in the home. E. E. Trosky, 2949 Central Ave., points to plumbing and heating as two of the things most responsible for the great strides made in the livability of homes. They are of fundamental Importance, for upon them the welfare of the entire family is dependent. "Plumbing is much more complicated In a house built now than it was in the houses of several years ago, yet there is absolutely no comparison between the two when the efficiency Is considered. Today plumbing is put in only after the plans of the house have been carefully studied —there Is no guess work—it is all installed in a most scientific manner. The same is true in regard to the heating plant and Its installation. It Is scientifically chosen and the Installation is just as careful'v made. "Our work is largely dependent upon the condition of the building industry and because of the very strong activity In this line we are having a correspondingly busy season. We expect this condition to prevail throughout the fall and winter season if weather permits," said Mr. Trosky. COURTHOUSE HAS A FIRE Blaze Is Started When Elevator Device Is Torn Loose. LADIES NOW JOIN IN BILLIARD GAME Wives of Presidents and Diplomats Become Experts. Tt. seems a far cry from the .last lingering days of summer to the Christmas season, yet many business firms are already laying the busiest season of the whole year. J. Kaufman, manager of the local branch of Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company, reports that holiday stocks of billiard tables are here and ready for the inspection of Interested parties. "There waa a time,” said Mr. Kaufman, "when it was the exception to the rule to find a billiard table In a home, but those days are long since past. Today every man who can afford a tabic Is placing one In his home, as he has come to realize the great source of recreational enjoyment that It will prove to every member of his family.” The game of billiards seems to have universal appeal. The billiard room of the White House in Washington was a favorite place with the late President Harding and his wife, both good players. For that matter, the game has always been very popular In the White House, not only for the President and his guests, but for the first ladies and their friends. Today women in the capital are among the most expert billiard players, many of them having perfected their game abroad. DOMINANI SPIRIT OF JAPANESE WILL REBUILD CAPITAL Not One Whimper Heard as Carnage Rules and Cities Are Razed. By CLARENCE DU BOSE United Pros Staff Correspondent TOKIO, Japan, Sept. 13.—1 never knew what the Japanese spirit was like until I saw millions of homeless refugees, vast privations, terrible suffering and indescribable loss visited upon the nation and still not a single whimper audible. Torn and twisted, the beloved capital city of the nation was wrenched into instant wreckage, jumbled in one mad moment into a single huge heap of junk and then burned. Yet, Japan continues to smile. Already working among the ruins, the spirit that made Japan a great power in half a century is seen on every hand. It is the spirit that will rebuild Toklo, although years will be required. Bodies Clog Canals In Yokohama dead bodies clog the canals like logs in a river jam. The congested slums and poorer quarters of both Tokio and Yokohama are thick with half-burned corpses, scarcely distinguishable from the charred timbers that trapped them. When the earthquake came great buildings swayed and pitched like ships in a heavy sea. Then throughout the area of 100 miles or more, from Tokio southward and many miles wide, literally every structure crumpled Instantly Into complete or partial wreckage. Fire followed, and, in a veritable Inferno, destroyed almost everything that remained, completely obliterating the heart of Japan’s richest business and industrial sections. In many places the ground buckled up into ridges. Great fissures opened. Thousands Crushed Most of the big factories and miljls collapsed, each crushing thousands of workers. The next two nights were hideous. Million, of
