ACCOUNTS BOARD REPORT CRITICiSES COIMMIDITOR Leo K. Fesler Denies Charges Made by State Examiners, Marion County is losing considerable interest in county money through methods adopted by County Auditor Leo K. Fesler in paying for bonds and coupons, according to a report on 1922 transactions to the board of county commissioners by the State board of accounts. Required records are kept onjy in part, it is pointed out. Thirteen bond issues, totaling more than $2,000,000, have never found their way on to the four bond registjjfs in the auditor's office, it is stated. Paid bonds and coupons returned by banks have never been checked against tne bond records, and there is no way to determine the amount of unpaid bonds, according to the report. “To Save Work” “All of which has been done to save work for the county auditor,” Field Examiners Harryman and Gilbert report. Other inefficiencies discovered, they report, are: Failure to keep the permanent road records required by law, using a sort of loose leaf system instead. Payment of claims without order of the county commissioners, who alone have authority to spend county money. Loss of part of the records of payment on track elevation in 1922. Minutes Not Kept Failure to keep minutes of the county commissioners court. The auditor denied that the county was losing interest on county money, or that his books are in such bad shape. “If the examiners say that bond issues put out since 1 was elected are not on record, they are in error,” he said. Fesler's salary for 1922 was shown to be $23,790.18. The county indebtedness at the end of the year was $5,923,600, the receipts having been $20,672,980. freighTrate’ CUT IS SOUGHT State Body Will Take Fight to Washington, The fight of the Indian State Chamber of Commerce for inciischiminate rates on petroleum and petroleum products from the continental fields to Indiana points, is to be carried to Washington. Weekly Book Review ‘Neurotic’ Maud Brewer Is Strangest Character Found in Modern Fiction
BY WALTER D. HICKMAN AUD BREWER is the strang est complex I have discovered i—J in modern fiction. Maud is the center of all the dra- ; matic action in Ernest Poole’s “DanI ger,” anew fall Macmillan Company ! publication. “Danger” is for the adult who is ! willing to face a certain problem of ; life which is not all sunshine. Maud Brewer did ambulance service in France during the World War. When peace was declared, Maud arrived home with her brother, Dallas, who returned with the dread earmarks of war. Maud had the insane idea that Dallas and all the other living soldiers of the World War should never forget the horrors of war. She saw no reason why there should be any happiness when there had been and still was suffering all I about. ; This desire to “carry on” and live | among the living reminders of the | war became a passion to her. To keep ; this passion alive she wrecked the life of her brother. The pathetic side of the situation is that Maud thought she was doing the right thing. In her unconscious program of ruin she drags Dallas, his young wife, her family and his friends into her net of destruction. - To ease her neurotic complex, Maud begins the use of a drug. It is then that we run across some of the most masterful dramatic writing in modern fiction. ■ “Danger” Will Be One of Real Books of the Year ! Poole by writing "Danger" has j given the modem rea/ling public a j dramatic probfem which will live. I j do not rave over a thing because it is morbid and neurotic. I want suni shine in my life but “Danger” will remain for years in my memory be i cause of the dramatic worth of the I story*. The author knows how to use his ! tools in the art of story telling. He does not give you thin, pale people, but real people fighting real problems. In that rosts the greatness of “Danger.” It will make you think, study and look beyond the confines of your own small room. The characters become nearly* world wide and in the end you will see that the author has been using individuals as the means of driving 5 home an international lesson. The world has been rather neurotic in the last five or six years, you know. “Danger” belongs to that very limited class of modern fiction which deserves the right to live. It challenges and receives the attention of thinking men and women. It is masterfully written and planned. Back i of the dark background is seen a ray of hope in characters which are I i natural. The First Year Under Strange ('ircumstances Is Pictured This dramatic story has a mighty* human and natural side—that deal- i ENTERPRISE CIVIC LEAGUE PROTESTS * Meeting Will Urge Placing of Crossing Officer. Because freight trains on the belt i railroad in West Indianapolis are said often to hold up traffic as long as twenty-five minutes, steps will be taken by citizens of that part of the city to remedy the situation. C. J. Ltmrman. president of the Enterprise Civic League of West Indianapolis, announced today his league would meet at 8 p. m. Friday in the Fletcher Savings & Trust Company branch on Oliver Ave. to take steps to have an officer stationed at the crossing to see that traffic is not delayed longer than three minutes. Further plans to establish a playground on seven acres of ground owned by the city at Kentucky Ave. and White River will be made. The site was recently proposed as a suitable location for a repair shop and garage for the housing of the equipment of the board of sanitary commissioners. A discussion of the proposed smoke abatement ordinance will be held. Many members of the league are said to be opposed to the ordinance.
ing with the modern idea of marriage and the matter of selecting a husband. Natalie Darrow is a modern girl with bobbed hair and a wholesome idea that married file should be one of reasonable happiness. Natalie did not count upon "outside" influences when she married Dallas Brewer. The outside influence in particular was “neurotic” Maude Brewer. As natural and reai as is the drawing of Natalie is that of Miss Tillinghast, who was an aunt and guardian angel of Natalie and her brother,

Jack. Another human being is the father of Jack and Natalie. Before Maude gets through with her neurotic adventure or second self she drags into dramatic situations Natalie, her brother and father, as well as Dallas Brewer. Here is drama which one would expect Ibsen to write. It is masterful, dignified and refreshing because an author has the courage to tackle his subject without wearing gloves. 1 am recommending “Danger” for i adult readers, and those who want something to think about. A vital story is told in a powerful manner. It will grip and hold you’as few of the modern books do. The Macmillan Company has every reason to be justly proud of "Danger.” Last week in reviewing Drinkwater’s “Robert E. Lee,” a play, I neglected to state that it was a Houghton Mifflin Company's publication. MONTH OLD BABY LEFT IN SUITCASE * Found on Downtown Corner at Gary, fly l nitrd Press GARY, Ind., Sept. 12.—Police of Gary w#re hunting today for the mother of a mortth-old girl baby found in a suitcase at a downtown corner. 10 OF WRECKED NAVAL DESTROYERS MAY BE SALVAGED # ’Work of Rescue Progresses Slowly and Twenty Men Are Still Missing, By United Press, LOS ANGELES, Cal., Sept. 12. Two of the eight vessels which went ashore in the Santa Bat bam channel during Saturday* night fog may be salvaged, it was learned today. The destroyer Chauncey, the least, damaged of the wrecked destroyer fleet, was the object of salvaging operations of a wrecking crew from the Mare Island navy yard. Plans are under way for immediate floating of the vessel, but the other six destroyers are to be left to their fate on the rocks. The freighter Cuba, which went ashore on San Miguel Island, only a few miles away, may* possibly be saved by the tug Peacock, which left San Pedro today. Captain Holland of the disabled boat is remaining on the island until this last chance of saving the vessel either proves successful or is abandoned. The work of recovering the dead is progressing slowly. Twenty men are still missing. Church Is Entered Neighobrs passing the All-Souls Unitarian Church, 1465 N.
