DEMOCRATS SPLIT •IN RACE TO NAME BELLSUCCESSOR Shipp, 'Home Rule’ Leader, and Van Nuys Are Mentioned, Marion County Democrats toady appeared to be split several ways as a result of the fight over a successor to the late Joseph E. Bell, Seventh District chairman. The successor is expected to be named at a meeting of precinct committeemen at the Indiana Democratic Club Club Wednesday night. C. C. Shipp during the last day or two has come to the front as one of the strongest possibilities. Shipp has been a leader of the so-called “home rule” element, which has been seeking the abolishment of State boards and commissions. He is being opposed by the Democratic State • organization, which is said to favor Frederi9k Van Nuys, former United States district attorney. Petitions have been circulated favoring Thomas D. McGee, attorney, for the chairmainship. At the same time, Russell J. Ryan, county chairman, who called the meeting. is said to have been collecting from precinct committeemen, has not indicated how he will exthem.

MODERN TOKIO WILE ARISE FROM RUINS OF QUAKE City to Be Laid Out Similar to Washington, D, C, —U, S, Friendship Cemented, By CLARENCE DUBOSE, United Press Staff Correspondent. TOKIO. Sept. 10. —An entirely mod err. Tokio is to rise from the of disaster. A plan similar to that used in building Washington, D. C., has been tentatively adopted. Electrical, manufacturing and other Industries already ave placing orders for machines, equipnry?nt and food with United States firms —even before the last cf Toklo’s corpses have been cleared from the ruins laid by the quake of Sept. 1 and the resultant fires. Reports from various devastated districts indicate the damage to property has been even greater than first reported. A tremendous tidal wave which swept Kamakura immediately after Oshlma did incalculable damage, espe cially in the summer resorts to which many foreigners go each year. Most of the foreigners were saved. Apparently about 250 foreigners lost their lives in Yokohama, a few American being among the number. Foreign refugees of earthquake and fire are being sent to Kobe, Chinese ports and America. Millions of Japanese refugees have nowhere to go. Their homes are destroyed, but it is believed all will be fed. A feeling already has grown up that Japanese-American friendship has been cemented by the disaster and the immediate aid given by the United States. The possibility of a war has been removed forever, they are saying. Maid and Silver Missing Mrs. Robert G. Moore, of 1436 N. New Jersey St., told the pßlice today that she had a colored maid who failed to appear for work. A search revealed that one half dozen silver spoons valued at $lO, were also missing. Two Automobiles Taken Clarence Bisker, 1005 Chadwick St., reported his car. parked near the Statehouse, was stolen. C. A. Isenhower, 1435 N. Illinois St., reports that his car was taken while parked In front of his home,

structlve program for the future which should bring the farmer some measure of relief. One of the most important actions of the conference was the approval of the Abbott-Oberholtzer plan for pooling wheat. By this method each county will be a separate unit in the marketing of its wheat and plans will be made by Which wheat can be shipped to bonded warehouses on the seaboard, where the wheat may be held and insured for a small charge and sold when the market is favorable. By this plan a car load shipment of wheat can be made up at any time and all or part of the wheat can be either sold or stored on arrival. Self-Made “Dick” Fails Richard Teeter, 1911 W.
