EDITOR OF NATION AGAINST MILITARY USE OFAIRCRAFT Oswald G, Villard Would Abolish Experiments With Ships for War, President Coolidge’s recent statement that the time is not ripe for the holding of an international air disarmament conference is not. in accord with the views of the majority of commentators who have replied to the American Legion’s national poll to ascertain public sentiment in regard to the question, according to Lemuel Bolles, national adjutant of the legion. Considerable difference of opinion is expressed by correspondents in regard to the advisability of this country’s refraining from the race in air armament which the legion charges is in progress among France) England and other European nations, advocated by President Coolidge in statement. Representatives Royal C. Johnson of South Dakota writes that he sees no way to prevent the building of commercial aircraft which may be made immediately available for war purposes and that “unless there is a limitation the government appropriation for aircraft must be greatly increased." His view is shared by Representative Samuel E. Winslow of Massachusetts who writes: “I would like to see a reduction of anything military in its character which would actually tend, in definite form, to reduce the possibility of war between nations. Meanwhile I want to make mighty sure that our country is able to hold its own in any contest which may arise.” On the other hand, Oswald Garrison Villard, editor of the Nation, who has usually opposed the legion policies, in indorsing the conference, writes that because of the ease with which commercial aircraft can be utilized for military purposes, he would favor forbidding the use of any aircraft for military purposes or any experimenting therewith. “There is no use limiting .military aircraft,” his letter states. “We must i abolish all experimenting with aircraft along military lines, the development of bombing, pursuit machines, etc.” His letter suggests that the scope ; of the conference should be broadened to wipe out altogether the chemical warfare services of the world. A similar suggstion was made in a let ter from Senator Holm O. Bursum of New Mexico, who wrote that the utilization of poisonous gas should be outlawed. Only two letters received by the legion during the past week expressed definite agreement with the stand of President Coolidge that the time is not propitious for the holding of a conference. They were from Governor James G. Scrugham of Nevada, a former national vice commander of the legion, and Dr. Harry Pratt Judson, president of the University of Chicago. •BLIND TIGERS’ CAUGHT Liquorous Jungle Beast Gets Owners a Visit to Judge.
