Kernel Home Presents Ideal Example of Compactness That Is Misleading as to Homelike Comforts Afforded

The upper cut shows the attractive exterior of the home of Mr. and Mrs. Karl L. Kernel in Irvington. The dining room on the left has charm and dignity. View shows sun parlor just beyond. The picture on the right shows the sun parlor, which affords a comfortable meeting place for the family. Friendliness seems to be the keynote of the living room shown in lower picture. Facing south, the home of Mr. and Mrs. Karl L. Kernel, 5260 E. Washington St., appears to be only a small cottage, whereas it is extensively roomy. The house Is built, of wide-siding, painted white, while the porch, deep foundation, and chimney are made of buff brick set in brown mortar. The red tile roof adds to the general attractiveness. Along the entire front and extending around a considerable distance on the east side of the house, is a wide porch with red cement floor, blocked to represent title. The part of the porch on the east side of the house is without a roof and form* a pleasing architectural contrast. Several steps lead from the street up to the walk which extends to the west end of the porch which really forms one of the most liveable- features of this interesting house. A hos pitable door, with heavy knocker, admits one to the living room.
LOCAL BUILDING IS REPORTED TO BE ABOVE NORMAL Indications Said to Point Toward Continued Activity During Winter, Construction work, both of a residential and business nature, has kept above normal in Indianapolis during the entire year of 1922, if the work done by the Indianapolis Coal Company is any barometer. Although the fall months probably will not show r as brisk business as the summer months, indications point to continued operations as long as the W’eather permits, and with a winter similar to that of last year, building should'continue throughout the year. Even If the weather is such as to prevent outside building, the repair work that is needed in interiors in residential and business properties will keep most of the skilled workers busy. Service Increased E. S. Horne, manager of the building material department of the Indianapolis CoaJ Company, reports the company has purchased a fleet of new trucks and also built anew warehouse at the yard at Fifty-Second St. and Monon in order to take care of their customers. “It is our Intention to give our customers the best of service and we have provided every facility that we can to enable us to do this. Our additional truck service will permit us to deliver goods so that there will be absolutely no waiting on the part of the builder." Permanency Is Ideal "Every year is seeing a great increase in the amount of building that is being constructed of stone, brick and other permanent materials. Today the cost of construction is high and in all probability will not bo less, so that the man who builds feels that it will pay him to build for permanency even if the Initial cost may be a little more. Another thing to be considered is the cost of upkeep. Statistics show that the average upkeep on a frame house Is 40 per cent while the upkeep on a brick house is but 10 per cent. No longer are the houses built of stone subject to the old disadvantage of dampness—their improved construction makes them as impervious to water and resultant dampness. The artistic possibilities of brick are just as great as those of wood—ln fact the majority of high-class architects
THE INDIANAPOLIS TIMES
The comfort and charm apparent in all of the house seems centered here. Satin embossed tapestry paper In subdued shades covers the walls; gum wood finished in the soft lustrous richness of mahogany is used for the the wood work in this room as in all of the other formal roms. The harmonious beauty of the walls and floors with velvet rugs of dignified coloring, furnish a perfect setting for the can Inset mahogany furniture that is used In the room. French windows seem to lure the sunshine into the room; artificial lighting Is usually artistic due to the rich fixtures, polychrome in finish, with the small globes cov- ‘ ered with shades made of crystal i beads. The fireplace with its plain, massive mantel of soft mahogany promises warmth and friendliness to all who near its hearthstone, j beautiful archways with wide woodbeautiful archways with wide woorwork which have no hangings to ] change the line of their graceful ! beauty. One of these forms the entrance to the sun parlor in front, while the other opens into the dining room. , (’heeriness and comfort are reflected : in the furnishings of the sun parlor. ! prefer to huild of brick or stone. Today there is infinite variety in colors end textures in bricks and for this reason they are extremely adaptable to artistic plans. VALUE OF PAINT . GROWSSTEADILY Permanency and Art Served in the Same Stroke, Increasing its longevity, adding to its attractiveness, protecting it from the weather elements-—these are the things that painting does for a house. The ravages of the weather in this changeable climate causes rapid deterioration unless buildings are protected against such Inroads, and the only way in which this can be done is by the use of paint—the surface Is then made impervious to the action of the weather elements and the building Is preserved. When the surface of a building is saved from deterioration, the whole building Is saved. Paint is so much more scientifically prepared now than It was even a few years ago—there is less alloy used and the properties are better proportioned. C. E. Utley, manager of the Marion Paint Company, attributes the satisfaction the users of their paints get to the purity of the products that go into the making. “We handle paints of all kinds—they are retailed direct to the consumer and thereby the middleman's profit is eliminated,” said Mr. Utley, who has just returned from an extensive trip in the East. “Color has come to play a large part In the life history of paint—it has been only the result of recent years’ experimentation that has made possible permanency In the use of color. How much of the charm and dignity of a house Is dependent upon the paint? It permits the expression of individuality and the owner’s artistic judgment; paint may be so chosen and applied as to do much to change the appearance of the building, in many cases even architectural mistakes may be partly rectified by the Judicious use of paint. Pedestrian Is Stabbed Miss Evaletia Williams, colored, 26, of 808 Blake St., Is charged with assault and battery. Witnesses told police she was chasing persons In the vicinity of Indiana Ave. and North St.v and approaching James Thurman, 24, of 541 Indiana Ave., colored, said: “Old James, you’s gone.” He was cut In the abdomen.

The furniture is of mahogany of graceful period design and is very' suitable to this room, which carries a dignified formality, intensified by the glass doors which open In the arched doorway that serves as an opening between the dining room and sun parlor. The morning meal is served in the breakfast room which is just back of the dining room and between it and the kitchen. This room is larger than many breAKfast rooms. The built-in china closet occupies the east wall while an Ivory breakfast table and chairs form the main furnishings of the room. The paper of this room is colorful and cheerily garlanded in spring flowers. The lighting fixtures Is lantern shaped and hangs low. The kitchen is finished In gray and no attention to detail has- been neg lected. 'Well-placed cabinets and cup boards provide plenty of space for storing kitchen needs. A small builtin back porch is an added attraction. Leading from the breakfast, room is a passage that connects with the hall that serves to unify these rooms with the bedrooms, nursery and bath. The east w’.ng of this hall has built-in iinen drawers, easily accessible from all bedrooms.

HOMES OF BRICK GROW IN NUMBER Variation of Colors Adds to Attractiveness of Material, The houses of today are constructed for their durability as well as for their beauty and for this reason, brick is coming to be a more and more favored material. W. W. Wise, brick contractor, 206 Indiana Trust Building, reports more and more of the expensive homes are being constructed of brick. They will withstand the effects of weather, in fact the elements only serve to make them more beautiful In many Instances. Vines may be planted around a brick house and the walls will never be Impaired while the walls of a frame house will soon begin to pull apart and deteriorate under the heavy growth of a vine, and for this reason the beautification of a house constructed of brick is less a problem. "Another thing, and one of vital interest, Is that the upkeep on a brick house Is so much less than the upkeep on a frame house, and in addition the brick house will stand for generations while the frame house is of less durability." "True enough, It Is easier to change a frame house than it is to change a brick house, but the houses of to day are so skilfully designed and con venlently planned that they seemed j to be built for tomorrow as well as for today." The variation In the colors of bricks , as well as their texture makes it pos sible to plan a house of individuality and originality. There need be no more sameness to two brick houses than to two frame houses. COMING BACK FOR SCHOOL Railroad Traffic Is Very Heavy, Ticket! Agent Reports. School daya! "All railroad traffic from summer resorts Is heavy now," Charles M. Whesler. city ticket agent for the Pennsylvania Railroad, said today. "Parents are bringing their children home for the opening of the schools." This la "between seasons” for the railroads. Summer tourist travel is about over. Winter tourist travel will not start for several weeks.
