BUILDING POMOONS OCCUPIES HIE OF YOUNGENGINEERS Parents Watch C, M, T. C, Boys Practice in Constructing Bridges. By DOROTHY STANHOPE (Times Staff Correspondent) CAMP KNOX, Ky., Aug. 20.—The engineer regiment of the C. M. T. C. built a pontoon bridge. The setting was a very beautiful one out a mile or two from camp, where a pond lies by the city of the road with a dense woods on two sides. The material for the bridge was all stacked in good order, ready for use, the skeleton boats, the canvas which was to cover them .the sections of flooring, the coil of rope and the stakes which were to support this as a railing. Parents Watch Work A number of parents had come from a distance for the week end with their boys. They were from Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and were on hand to see the feat of engineering. At a given signal the various pieces of canvas were spread out, the akeleton boats placed on them, and covered, the canvas being tied by rope. While one detail of men was doing this, another was pushing the guy from the end of the wire down to the edge of the water. Then as the covered pontoons were handed to them, the sectional floor covering was fitted in its groove, a guy rope attached, a stanchion pushed Into its socket and the rope railing tied to it. Then the pontoon was pushed out into the lake. Process Is Repeated. The projecting floor was fitted into a second pontoon and the building process repeatde as with the first. second was pushed into the lake. So it went on until the lake was bridged. At each end a section of flooring was placel as a gangway fastened to the shore by sakes. -The record time made for building and dismantling the pontoon, from start to the replacement of the material In order was 21 minutes and 30 seconds made a day or so ago.
