Open Season Approaches for Despised Hay Fever
Ker-choo! Get your handkerchiefs ready. The first sneeze of the hay fever season is only a few days away, and hundreds of residents of Indianapolis are preparing for few weeks of misery. It will last until the first frost. The annual “drive” of ragweed will open in less than a week, Dr. Herman T. Morgan, secretary of the city board of health, said today. Here’s the advice of Dr. Morgan: Preventive Measures 1. Wear amber glasses, as light increases the irritation in the eyes. 2. Keep your bedroom windows tightly shut in the day time, but open them wide at night. 3. Avoid exercise that requires deep breathing. Os course. Dr. Morgan added, it would be a good idea to seek relief in cooler climate such as a Michigan lake, but for the average citizen who can’t afford it of has been on his vacation, it looks as if preventatives were the only hope. Most of the usual hay-fever remedies are mere pallatives, Dr. Morgan says, and do not get at the root of the trouble. One of the best of these is adrenalin. \ Ragweed to Be Busy The common ragweed, which is the great cause of hay-fever in the eastern part of the United States, and the Russian thistle, which is blamed on the Pacific coast will be shedding their polen about Aug. 15. The wind carries this for miles and it irritates the mucous membrane of those who are sensitive. “Some people have hay-fever and others, exposed under identical conditions, do not,” Dr. Morgan said. “Just why, we do not know, but heredity seems to have a marked Influence.” Medical science's only real treatment for hay-fever at present must be begun several weeks in advance. This consists of hvpordermic injections of an extract made from the pollen of the offending plant. It tends to immunize the patient and the results

COKE USE URGED AS RELIEF FROM SMOKENUISANCE Civic Clubs Plan Campaign —Gas Company Promises Cooperation, Plans are being discussed by executive officers of the Federation of Community Civic Clubs for a campaign among householders urging the use of coke as an effective means of relieving Indianapolis of a smoke nuisance this winter. V At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce smoke abatement committee Thursday, C. L. Kirk, general manager of the Citizens Gas'Company, assured Edward O. Snethen. federation president, and the chamber smoke j abatement committee, that the gas | company would cooperate in such a ! campaign. Arrangement would be made where- : by coke would be sold directly to the Indianapolis consumer, saving a 5 per cent commission which ordinarily goes to the Domnoff-Joyce Company j of Cincinnati, Ohio. Copies of the revised smoke abatement ordinance will be sent to all civic and luncheon clubs, Snethen
said. Each club will be asked to pass resolutions favoring the ordinance. In a few weeks a general mass meeting will be held, when the ordinance will be explained before it is handed to city council. Efforts will be made to have the ordinance in effect before the cold weather arrives.
