Dreams of Spring Byington Come True; ‘Rip’ Is a Big Delight at Brookside Park

k By WALTER D. HICKMAN. I" 1 WEET WORDS ARE THESE. | I “Your share advance royalty l - I check mailed today." 'jThose were the words which greeted Spring Byington of the Stuart Walker Company last night when she opened a telegram from John Cort, New York producer. Last winter Miss Byington. in collaboration with Marie de Montajvo and Huyler van Iloevenberg, both newspaper women of New York City, wrote a three-act comedy, “White Chips." •*The comedy was submitted to Cort. Several weeks ago Cort informed Miss Byington that he was impressed with the play and was ar.xious to produce it. Miss Byington’s play will be produced in New York some time between Sept. 1 and Oct. 1 if present plans tire carried out. She has been offered tiie main role, but has not definitely made up her mind, as she is thinking Ct retiring from the stage, with the exception of appearances with the Walker Company here next season, for the purpose of devoting her time to - play-writing. This week, >£ies Byington is playtrig the title role in “Enter Madame” at the Murat. She leaves on Sunday for her home in Leonardsville, N. Y., before going to New York to attend rehearsals of her play. On Saturday night. Miss Byington Xyill stage her local farewell for the pe&son. She has been playing only leads with the Walker company here this season and in Cincinnati. ( . It was in “The Ruined Lady” and |in “Enter Madame” that Miss Byingion won her greatest triumphs although her work has been excellent ip every show this season. How Many Dots Are There in a Bottle of Ink? Science may never answer this question, “How many dots are there in .a bottle of ink?” makes no difference if the question can be answered or not, but Browning and Roberts, black-face comedians, are asking it at the Palace. -Personally, I think it would depend upon the blotter. Now don’t try to be funny. All right, will not. ...Browning and Roberts are easily the winners on the new bill at the Palace. They have a hunch of delightfully funny chatter. Their method of delivery is about two-thirds of the battle. Their conversation about opera is a comedy gem. They will pLease 99 per cent of any variety audience. It is announced that Felix Patty, the great French trainer, presents “Tarzan.” the sensation of the season. Personally. I do not know whether Tar*an is a baboon or what. If Tarzan is-a baboon, it Is the greatest comedysinimtl on the stage today. If not, it is a pleasing burlesque. Helen Higgins and Edith Blossom, ggvsted by Horace Bentley at the piaro, appear in a number of dances. Austin and Bergere need a course in

It is that of seeing Rip Van Winkle come to liie on the stage It has been so long since old Rip had his big day on the American stage that few of the present theatergoers have ever seen him. For those who have not seen him or for those who would renew his acquaintance a trip to Brookside Park this week is worth while. About 3.000 children of all ages laughed and suffered with Rip last night when I saw the play. This famous old show is befrng presented in the Municipal Theater by G. Carlton Guy and his stock company. From a production standpoint it is the biggest and Just about the

best thing Gtiy has done. As far as the play It has a few defects which show up when it is viewed from a modern standpoint. But who minds a few flaws in a play that has the dwarfs in the mountains, rainstorms, villains and such a lovable old vagabond as Rip Van Winkle. Guy is playing Rip. It is a part which is suited to him and he gets all the comedy and pathos out of the part. The scene of Rip’s awakening is one of the high lights in the performance. Others in the cast who stand out are Elsie Fowler as Rip’s wife, Bert Merling as Henrik and Guy’s two kiddies. I think every child In Indianapolis should see this show. Guy is to be congratulated. Performances will be given at Brookside Friday night and at Garfield for five nights, starting next Monday. (By Observer.) -I- -I- -IOther attractions on view today include: Princeton and Vernon at the Lyric: “Enter Madame" at the Murat; “Backbone" at the Ohio; "Trifling With Honor” at the Apollo: “The Birth of a Nation” at the Rialto; Elaine Hammerstine in “The Woman Game” at the Isis; "Trilby” at the Circle and "Boston Blackie” at Mister Smith’s.
