Dutch Colonial Home Stands as Imposing Reminder of an Age When Its Luxuries Were Things Unknown
ise, combined with the charm and room occupies the space at the fr |*try of present modernization, has 0^ the hall, and , il 18 most comp I-' —/ . L.W I ■ - ' n ...
The dignity of the Dutch Colonial house, combined with the charm and artistry of present modernization, has resulted most happily in the new home of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Deupree, 4401 Broadway. Facing Forty-Fourth St., the house is Ideally situated on an unusually deep lot, with sufficient elevation and breadth to afford a background that is suitable for the imposing character of the house. Os soft salmon-colored bricks that seem to belong to, the Colonial age, with dormers of wide siding, painted an ivory-white, window shutters of green and slate roof of the same shade, the exterior Is most attractive. A winding cement walk, bordered with a formal brick pattern, leads
from the street to the entrance porch, typically Dutch Colonial, with seats on either side. The solid heavy door, with braes knocker, reminiscent of the days of our forefathers, opens to admit one to a lovely center hall. "What a far cry It Is from the oprresslve atmosphere created by the designing and furnishing of n house built a half century ago to the delightfully welcoming coolness and comfort of the Deupree home! The architect, Fermor S. Cannon, so skilfully planned the house that no possible convenience has been lost sight of yet at the same time the dignity of the house as a whole and the beauty of every detail have been kept intact. No characteristic lends more to the beauty of the Interior than does the artistic use of colors, relieving the for* mality of the true colonial type with a charming friendliness. The center hall is simply furnished; an old-fashioned drop leaf table over which is suspended a round mirror, with chair to match, form the only unit of furnishing in the room. Green NEW FUEL AND SUPPLY COMPANY OPENSITS DOORS Hitzelberger Concern Carries Complete Line of Necessary Materials, The great impetus that . has been given the building industry during the past several months has been responsible for various new concerns handling building materials to spring up over different parts of the city. The Hitzelberger Fuel and Supply Company is anew concern that has recently opened for business at Roache St. and the canal. Mr Hitzelberger has been prominent in business circles for a number of years and Is well known over the city. This company carries a complete line of cement, lime wall plaster, lath, sewer tile and other materials necessary to the construction of a home or business building. Only first-class materials are carried and authentic advice is given the customer in regard to kinds and quantities of materials best suited to his particular needs. In addition to building materials, this company carries the best grades of coal and coke. The. company urges the buying of coal now, so that the customer will have no trouble in getting the quality of coal desired and will have It in storage ready for use at the v beginning of cold weather. Last year the trouble many people experienced in getting coal of the better grades has made them much mqre ready to buy earlier this year, for indications point to little if any redudetion in price and there i# unlimited satisfaction in protection against cold weather.

The stairway, the hall a well as the living-room and dining-room are covered with heavy taupe velour carpet. , On the left of the hail is the large living room, most inviting with its lovely, comfortable looking furnishings. The walls of this room, like the walls of the other downstairs rooms, are finished in graded stippling. The decorator, Charjes Muller, has hit upon a very delightful color scheme In all rooms, varying the opaque appearance with the predominance of a harmonizing color, enough to make each room anew note of Interest, yet keeping them all In colorful harmony. The deep fireplace with marble mantel blends so beautifully with the walls of the living room that it seems to be a very part of them, especially when one considers the color in Steele’s "Brown County” that is most appropriately hung above It. The drapes in this room are of heavy damask, while the glass curtains, like all of the downstairs window curtains, are of gauze. A deep shade of lavender is used in the mohair upholstered suite in this room. Two fireside chairs of blue and silver silk tapestry, with the l-ich color of numerous oriental rugs, give the room a wealth of color that Is as beautiful as it is harmonious. From the living room one goes down a step or two to a lounge, with three sides made of windows. Tiled floor of soft salmon shade, with notes of lav-
Countess Finds Happiness in Running String of Laundries
By SEA Service |r~n ONDON. Aug. 2.—Call it reI action from the wai, if you L_J will, but the fact remains that British women, bred in court atmosphere, are finding it difficult to go “back to the old way of living.” One of the nobility who “felt that way” is the beautiful Countess of Clonmell, wife of an Irish peer. During the war she was active In relief work. She worked hard, and when the armistice came and court life settled back she grew restless, she says. She wanted to be a business woman. In the world of facts and figures, she felt, she could find true happiness. And so the countess startled aristocracy by opening a laundry in the fashionable Mayfair district. She called her establishment "The White Elephant.” Perhaps she felt It would prove such. But It didn't. Business flourished. She made money. And then she displayed typical American enterprise by expanding and starting branches in various parts of the Isles. The countess was the former Miss Rachel Berrldge of Toft Hill, Warwick. She intends to remain a business woman always.
ROOM AND FIREPLACE. NO. 4—LOUNGE ROOM WHICH ALSO SERVES AS SUN PARLOR. NO. 6—ONE OF THE BEAUTIFUL BEDROOMS. ender. orange and blue furnish a most delightful setting for the lighter shade of lavender that Is used in the poly-chrome-finished, upholstered furniture. Linen cretonne in lavender, purple, with markings of black and orange is used for the drapes. Lamps add a further note of cheer and beauty. The lustrous walnut furniture of a modified Louis XIV period gives a certain dignity to the dining room, which Is located to the right of the hall. Blue drapes are used, while the wal'.s of this room show considerable blue. The cornices, with flat convential decorations, lend a bit of dignified beauty. From the dining room one enters a charming breakfast room, cool and Inviting in its decorations of green. The breakfast table and chairs are stippled in green with applied fruit motifs. Green chintz curtains are used at the windows on the east side, while a built in china closet occupies the wall space on the west. The kitchen, done in gray enamel, opens from the breakfast room and is complete and convenient In the very well planned arrangement of Its builtin cabinets and cupboards. English inlaid linoleum of black an d gray tile pattern is used in the kitchen and breakfast room. Doors lead from, the kitchen to the garage, and also down to the basement. A small den Is immediately back of the stairway. Its walls are lined With bookcases. The furnishings are comfortable, promising an enjoyable hour with a favorite book. On the second floor the general ar nangpment provides for jfoufl bedrooms. two on either side of the hall,

with connecting baths. A dressing room occupies the space at the front of the hall, and it is most complete with full-length mirrored doors, shelves and drawers for every kind of clothing. The children’s bedrooms are on the east side of the hall. Promising fairy dreams, indeed, is the charming room occupied by the little daughter; the opaiescent-flnished furniture, the cameo-like paper, the flower-sprigged ch;,itz drapes, with valances of rosecolored ruffles, all combine to make a room of rare loveliness. The bath on this side is of mat, glazed tile in buff shades, simply but fully equipped. Ivory furniture is used in the other room in this suite, with blue predominating in the color scheme. The front bedroom on the west side
of the house is papered with black background, chintz-patterned paper. French gray, cane inset furniture is used with bed and dresser appointments of deep lavender, silk poplin with contrasting trim of robin-egg blue. A chaise lounge of lavender is used in this room. The bath on this side is of tones of gTeen. The guest room is furnished in mahogany. The glass curtains in all the upstairs rooms are of fine-dot-ted net; in the rooms on the west, instead of drapes, English-glazed chintz blinds in harmonizing colors ore used, with a delightful effect. Servants’ quarters are over the double garage. Two room 9 and bath are adjoining the rest of the upstairs, or may be entirely closed off, as the owner decides. The heating plant, water softening plant and incinerator provide comfort and convenience never dreamed of in the day when the first Dutch colonial house was built.
PIPELESS FURNACE ANSWERSDEMAND New System Is Recommended by Daufel Brothers, In this climate, varying from the very severe cold weather in the coldest part of the winter to the chilly, damp, penetrating days that are much a part of our winter season, the quesiton of the proper kind of heating plant is one of primary importance. Daufel Brothers, 1133 Hoefgen St., carrying the Sunbeam pipe and pipeless furnaces have found they answer in a very practical and satisfacotry way this question of proper heating. Built so they will furnish the right amount of heat for comfort, supplying at the same time plehty of pure, fresh air, with just the proper amount of moisture, they seem to furnish an ideal heat at a surprisingly low upkeep. due to the small amount of coal they consume. Each customer Is carefully advised as to just what type and size of furnace he needs for adequate heating of his house, so there is no guesswork involved, providing a scientifically planned installation. This firm also makes a specialty of all kinds of sheet metal work, giving every bit q i work turned out the same careful attention. In addition, the firm is adequately prepared to take care of all kinds of furnace repair and are urging people to have their furnaces inspected now, for a very little attention just now will, in many instances, save a lot of time, e: ergy and money, to say nothing of inconvenience at the beginning of the cold weather. Special attention should be given to the pipes of the furnace to see that they are properly covered, for at least 10 per cent of the heat is lost if the pipes are net covered or If the covering is badly worn.
