PROWLER TAKES AIRY ROUTE TO ENTERBUILDING Five-Inch Plank, Fifty Feet Above Street, Helps Man Across Roofs, . Police would have caught a burglar todav if he had only slipped. They probably would have taken him to the hospital instead pf jail, too. But the burglar didn’t slip. Neither did he steal anything, although he pried two bars from a window on the third floor of the Crystal Theater, 117 N. Illinois St. The burglar placed a plank five inches wide and about ten feet long from the window ledge of the third floor of the Hoosier Building, 18 W. Market St., to the root of a building at 105 N. Illinois St. The plank was in a diagonal position and it was raining. Across this slippery, wet plank the burglar walked to the roof of the Illinois St. building at 2 a. m. today, continued over roofs of three other buildings and dropped ten feet to the roof in the rear of the Crystal Theater building. He pried off two iron bars from the window of the Crystal Theater. The police believe the prowler was then frightened away. The burglar climbed an air duct reaching to the roof, from which he had dropped a few minutes before, and returned to the Hoosier building across the plank. Had he slipped he would have fallen fifty feet. A merchant police officer was told by a stranger he saw a man on the toof of the Illinois St. building a few minutes before. The merchant policeman notified the police and Sergeant Dean and a squad investigated. The theater had not been robbed. Police say the burglar may liave been one of the yeggmen who blew the Lyr.c Theater safe a few weeks ago. INDIANA MAN NAMED ON COAL COMMITTEE New Policy of National Association to - Be Outlined. Phil H. Penna of Terre Haute, secretary of the Indiana Bituminous Coal Operators’ Association, and Alfred M. Ogle of Terre Haute, president of the Vandalia Coal Company, are among twenty-five members of anew policy committee of thte National Coal Asso ciation, John C. Brydon, president of the association, nanounced today. The purpose of the committee, according to the announcement, is to continue the study of problems con fronting the industry, to pass on questions of policy affecting the associa tion and to form a closer liason between the mine owners and* the public.

The power plant and equipment funds were provided by the 1923 Legislature. YOUTHS RESCUE FAMILY Four Persons Saved From Drowning by Three Boys. Bn Times Special _ _ . 'GARY, Ind., Aug. 2.—1. Sohr, his wife and two daughters. 12 and 6, of Cleveland, Ohio, were rescued Wednesday from death when three boys, all under 20, dived into the Little Calumet River and broke open the doors of the sedan in which the quartet were imprisoned ■when the motor car ran off a bridge. The boys were Charles Davis, Chester Brownfield and John Locke, all of Portsmouth, N. H., who are motoring to the West Coast. Merrill St. Lieutenant Hudson alleges the men made a wager at a baseball game Wednesday and he saw the money change hands. Robbers Murder Merchant. By Vnited Press CHICAGO. Aug. 2.—L. J. Arnold, 50, who came to Chicago from St. Louis recently, was found murdered in the rear of his delicatessen store early today. He had been stabbed several times. Blood was spattered about the walls and furniture was broken. Several trunks and the cash register had been rifled, leading police to believe robbery was the motive. Traffic Officers Preach Eternal Caution

Hundreds of Indianapolis citizens weekly are receiving first-hand facts about traffic, graphically told by two veterans of the Indianapolis traffic squad, members of the accident prevention bureau recently created in the police department. These two "corner veterans” are Trafficmen Frank Oewn (right) and Walter E. Paul, shown in the photograph as they addressed Pennsylvania Railroad employes. Owen and Paul have been making talks to department store, taxicab and railroad employes, besides civic and fraternal club members as well as the public in general, since December, preaching the gospel of ‘‘eternal caution.”
What Is to Become of Busts of Former Governors on English?
What is to become of the busts of nine former Governors of Indiana or Indiana Territory on front of the south half of the Hofei English build, ing when it is razed to make way for the new Famous-Players Lasky Corporation photoplay theater? William E. English, owner of the hotel property, who has leased the south half to a holding company for the movie corporation for ninety-nine years, today said he hopes the State will preserve them. "I have thought of taking the matter up with Governor McCray,” said English. "It would be a pity to see them destroyed. They are excellent likenesses.” The busts were placed on the hotel by English's father, the late William E. English Sr. Busts of members of the English family are on the other half of the building. Since -the movie corporation controls the building, the Governor busts will be its property, but English said he thought the corporation would be willing to give them to the State. Swem’s body was found in three feet of water, and as he was a good swimmer, it is supposed he suffered from a Heart attack. Three years ago a younger brother was drowned.

Paul stresses carelessness as the principal cause of accidents. The boulevard stop system is explained. Paul warns motorists to have regard for children, even if they be vlloatlng an ordinance by playing in the street. Both officers mads a thorough canvass of city schools last year and are planning return engagements this winter. In addition the officers are the star performers at the Thursday ifternoon traffic matinee in city court.

VAN AUKEN SLAYS TO FINISH ORDER Public Service Commissioner Presents Resignation, The resignation of Glenn Van Auken of Auburn, member of the public service commission since 1919, probably will not become effective until after Van Auken has completed work In connection with drafting the Indiana Bell Telephone rate order, to Which he was assigned, it was believed today. After it became generally known Wednesday that Van Auken desired to retire, Governor McCray announced that the commissioner’s resignation had been in his hands since July 1. McCray said he had withheld announcement because he wished to persuade Van Auken to remain. McCray spok3 highly of Van Auken’s connection with the commission and said he regarded him as one of the most valuable utility men on the commission. Van Auken’s friends say he desires to return to his law practice. Wounded by Negro Burglar By United Preen TERRE HAUTE, Ind., Aug. 2. When Ethel Pliant, pretty 17-year-old girl, heard a noise in her father’s store room, below the rooms in which her family lives and in which she was asleep, she went to investigate shortly after midnight. Finding a negro robbing the store, she sought to detain him while she screamed for help. Today she was recovering at a hospital from the effects of a bullet wound In the shoulder, Inflicted by the negro as he ran, after she had broken away from his efforts to stifle her cries. Police have no trace of her assailant.
