Giants Battle Both Pirates and Reds This Week in National Pennant Race :\<* f * ' • /

M’GRAW’S TEAM FACES BIG TASK IN 11 SERIES Two Games in Today Open Hostilities — Phils Are in Cincy. By HENRY FARRELL United Press Sports Editor NEW YORK, July 30.—Before the end of this week John McGraw may have a better idea of where his New York Giants are going- to end in the National League pennant race. With just a slim lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds and a team that has _more "heart” than anything else, the world’s Champions are on treacherous ground. Bad breaks in the coining series with the Pirates and Reds no doubt Will make or break the club. Starting boday in Pittsburgh with a doubleheader, the Giants will battje the Pirates over five games in four days. Then the champions go to Cincinnati to do five games in five days with the Reds. • Ten Games in Eight Days With no abundance of good pitching, ten games in eight days against the best clubs in the leagup is a champion’s job for the Giants. The Giants today were three games ahead of the Pirates and 3*6 games In front of the Reds. If the Pirates should take the series and the Reds should route the Phljs, the Giants would leave Pittsburgh in third place. To give either the Pirates or the Reds the lead at this critical stage of the fight might be disastrous for the Giants. McGraw started well on the trip by breaking even with the Cubs. The form shown by Jack Bentley and ‘‘Rosey - ’ Ryan was encouraging, as It indicated that the champions might have .two reliable hurlers to depend on In their journey through the West. “Banny” Is Needed When Dave Bancroft gets back into the game the defense and the offense will be strengthened. Young Jackson has been doing well at short during the absence of the team captain, but he hasn’t the brains and the experience of Bancroft. ( The Yankees are on top in the American with a lead of fourteen and one-half games, and they have sixty more games on the schedule. Even if they do no better than break even In their remaining games, they will finish with ninety-four victories and sixty defeats. To beat them out and win the pen nant, the Cleveland Indians would have to win forty-five of thel/ remaining fifty-nine contests,' and that is a huge job and practically impossible.

Going Strong at First as Understudy for George Sisler

By XEA Service ST. LOUIS, July 30.—George Sisler was voted the most valuable player in the American League in 1922. Eye trouble has kept Sis.ler out of the game this year. “Dutch” Schliebner is acting as his understudy at first base for the St. Louis ment in baseball. . - Schliebner was grabbed by 'Fohl from Brooklyn as a last resort. Hie was the only first sacker available.. Unable to hit in the - National, he had been relegated to the bench. National’ League critics rated Schliebner a fair fielder and not much better than a .200 hitter in the majors. A fast ball Inside was said to be his weakness. Manager Fohl took a chance: Inside of a week he had changed Schliebner’s style at bat and the averages show thai he is hitting close to .300. Had it not been for the Browns’ dire need of a first baseman, Schliebner would now be back in the minors, despite the fact that he has proved he is gs big-league caliber. • Schliebner the ability but needed much coaching, which he received under Fohl. ,His showing as Sisler's understudy has won him a place with the Browns even if £>isler should return to, the game.

The series will be resumed Tuesday and needless to say the Hendrieksmen will be out to ex tend their oudden winning streak. A short streak, yes, but nevertheless unexpected and thrill-like. Mullins and Others Demand Boxing Rulers Explain Sidetracking of Colored Giant for Firpo, By United Press NEW YORK, July 30. —Efforts to have the boxing commission interfere with the Dempsey-Firpo heavyweight championship arranged by Tex Rickard for Sept. 14, may be made by rival promoters of Rickard and backers of Harry Wills, the colored challenger, it was learned today. ,

Objection has been raised to the match in both quarters on the ground that Wills should have priority over the South American because he challenged first in the official manner with the posting of a forfeit. Paddy Mullins, manager of the colored challenger, said today that ho would attend the regular meeting of the boxing commission Tuesday after noon and call attention to the fact that .his challenge apparently has been ignored. Mullins denied that he had retained counsel to press his appeal or to take it into the courts. Rickard and the commissioners are remaining silent, but it is understood the commission will grant Dempsey a license to fight and approve the Dempsey-Firpo fight on the ’ground that while Dempsey and Wilis have signed artie’es for a contest, no pro moter has made an official attempt tc stage the match and that the commission caqnot make matches or interfere with other matches tjiat are made in accordance with the rules. McNulty and Campbell made smother brilliant sprint and beat the throw home with the winning run. In the ninth of the second the Brewers filled the bases with one down. Bigbee batted for Mellilo and Burwell tightened and struck him out. Gearln batted for McCarthy and filed to Christenbury for the game-end-lrtg out. Action a-plenty in both battle*. The Indians were off form in the field, but their gameness pulled them through. The fans appreciated their fighting qualities. It was a gay crowd.
