Dundee Takes Title, but Frenchie Criqui ‘Carries on’ in Defeat

By HENRY FARRELL (United Press Sports Editor) [T JEW YORK, July 27.—With the V same stout heart that carried i ™ him through the horrors of Verdun and the same indomitable w-ill that urged him to grip his bayonet when a shell had removed a part of his face, game Gene Criqui, the Frenchman with the twisted face, passed over the featherweight championship of the world Thursday night to Johnny Dundee. As he “carried on” under the blue uniform of France when everything seemed lost, so Criqui kept going last night for fifteen rounds when he knew he couldn’t win. AMATEUR BALL NINES IN BATTLE DOWN STRETCH Three-Team Fight in Commercial —Important Game Saturday in Fraternal Between De Moiays and Odd Fellows. As the local sandlot league season draws to a close the rivalry is at intense heat. This is especially true in two leagues, the Commercial and Fraternal. Three teams in the Commercial have a chance for the pennant in one of the greatest down-the-stretch struggles that ever has been staged in Indianapolis loops.

In the Fraternal two teams are battling for the flag. The regular schedule closes one week from Saturday on Aug. 4 in all leagues, but postponed games will be played off on the two following Saturdays. By one-half Game f In the Commercial League Eli Lilly is holding to the top rung by the slender thread of one-half game. Falr-banks-Morse and Prest-O-Ulte ai e tied for seoond place just a few points behind. Any three can win. Nofae of the leaders meet this Saturday, but on Aug. 4, Fairbanks tangles with Prest-O-Lite. It should be some tangle. Then in the postponed games Fairbanks meets Eli Lilly Aug. 11. On Aug. 18 Prest-O-Lite and Eli Lilly play over the game that was thrown out because of an Ineligible player. At a glance It can be seen that anything can happen In the Commercial. It is easily the warmest race in town. De Moiays In Front The Fraternal loop Is simply a twoteam affair. At present the young De Moiays qre on top with a one-game advantage over the Odd Fellows, last year’s city champions. The two lead-

Round by round from the first to fifteenth it was one story—"Criqui missed and Dundee countered with a left hook and a right to the jaw.” To have been . king, if only for a little more than a day, to . have earned just a little money and a reputation for sportsmanship and gameness that will be to his undying credit, are all that Criqui has to take back to his France, which just a few weeks ago w*s celebrating its first real world’s championship. Perhaps America can rejoice that the featherweight championship is back in this country, but there is no occasion to warrant boasting.

The Frenchman was poorly handled by his manager. He could have demanded the right to stay away from the Dundee bout for at least six months, but Frenchmen are in bad with the New York boxing commission. When one of Criqui’s false teeth had been knocked clear through his cheek there was nothing to stop the flow of blood and his seconds just let him bleed. He was badly advised and greatly neglected in his corner. Officials placed the crowd at 22,240 and the receipts at $114,552. Criqui drew 27% P er cent, or $42,845, while Dundee's end of 12% per cent will be $14,281. Criqui defended his titio a little over a month after he had won it. Watch Dundee now and see what he does!
