PROBE OF AnACK • DURING FIRING OF CROSSESJOPENED Police and Firemen\ Injured Attempting to Put Out Blaze. A thorough investigation was started today by police to bring about the arrest of the man or men who threw rocks and tile that struck three city firemen and two police officers who were extinguishing two "blazing o!l-eoaked rag crosses at Miley Ave. and Vermont St., Wednesday, shortly before 10 p. m. When firemen responded to the call to the blaze, they were forced to fight their way to the scene with the aid of guns and fire-fighting weapons. As chemicals were thrown on the blazes, rocks were hurled through the air. Several pieces of tile were taken to police headquarters. They were said to have struck Lieut. Thomas Crahan, Ed McGinnis and Joe Dillon of Fire Station No. 18. Dillon was struck on the head, causin ga cut that required four stitches. Police Sergt. Donald Tooley was struck on the head and dazed, but not seriously injured. Lieut. Cliff Richter was cut on the hand, but remained on the scene in charge until the crowd was under control. Firemen told Sergeant Allißon that officers were given pieces of the tile and told the names of some of the men said to be responsible. The crowd, estimated by police at 5,000, gathered at Miley Ave. and New York St. for a lawn fete. After a speech at which time an electric cross was burned, the crowd moved, to the other scene, where the inflammable substances were lighted-EX-FOLLIES GIRL AND NOBLEMAN SEEK LICENSE Earl of Northesk and Jessica Brown In Chicago Wedding Bent. The couple was refused a license In New York June 5. Tne Earl today admitted the wedding is to be “very soon,” but denied it is to take place today under anew Illinois law lifting the ban on “early marriages’* following divorce. BANKS ARRANGE MERGER Redkey Institutions May Consolidate Following Failure of One. Plana are under way for the consolidation of the Farmers’ State Bank of Redkey. In Jay County a few miles southwest of Portland, and the Bank of Redkey, which failed a few days ago. Thomas D. Barr, deputy State bank examiner, today said he visited the institutions early this week and found consolidation plans being worked out successfully. He said he would visit the town again in a few days. Failure cf the bank was attributed to consistent overloaning in the face of agricultural depression. CHURCH PLANS RALLIES Preparations are under way in every county of Indiana for rallies, July 1 to Aug. 21, in Methodist churches, according to the Rev. Jesse Bogue, editor of the Indianapolis Area Herald, a Methodist publication. The new plan is partly supplementing the district and conference system. The Marion County rally will be held In Indianapolis, Aug. 7.

M’CRAY MAKES APPEAL State Still Far Short of Quota for Camp Knox. Only 725 men, 69 per cent of Indiana's quota for the citizens military traning at Camp Knox, Ky., have applied, Governor McCray said today in urging the State to fill its quota of 1,019 men. All expenses, Including transportation, quarters and rations, are paid by the Federal Government. The course begins July 27 and ends Aug. 25. Men between 17 and 24 are eligible.
