FIGHT PROMOTERS CONTINUE DESPITE NI'CRAYJEFIM War Department's Permission Asked for Dempsey Battle at Fort, In spite of Governor McCray’s flat refusal to approve a Jack Dempsey fight anywhere in Indiana, local promoters today are understood to be seeking means of escaping the Goverpor’s jurisdiction by staging a battle on Labor day at Ft. Benjamin Harrison. Tom Gibbons, who finished a fifteenround bout with Dempsey at Shelby, Mont., July 4, is mentioned as Dempsey’s opponent, should War Department authorities grant permission to hold the fight. Governor McCray was expected today to submit the question to Attorney General U. S. Lesh. Col. Allen Parker, commandant at Ft. benjamin Harrison, said it was beyond his authority to permit the bout. He said he would extend every courtesy to the promoters and participants, however, in the event the War Department approved the fight. Weeks’ Permission Asked J. L. Baugh, president of the Union Steel and Wire Company, headed a committee of five who met with Governor McCray Tuesday. Governor McCray said it was his duty to uphold the State law against prize fighting and referred the committee to his action last year in stopping the Jack Dempsey-Bill Brennan Labor day match at .Michigan City. Baugh said today that the committee has wired to John W. Weeks, secretary of war, and expected an answet favorable to the fight today. He said Jack Kearns. Dempsey's manager, has had a representative here and that the group has consulted attorneys, who said the fight could be held. Governor’s Statement James A. Bingham, leeal attorney, has been engaged by Baugh as counsel. Baugh would not reveal the names of other local persons interested. Proposals have been made, it is said, to offer one-half the receipts to disabled soldiers. The question today stood at the matter* of whether or not Ft. Benjamin Harrison is part of Indiana or strictly Government property. McCray’s statement, “I am Governor of all of Indiana and not just part of it,” was taken as an indication that the proposed fight may resolve itself into a controversy. VETS PUT BEAUTY FIRST Organization Opposes Purely Utilitarian Building as War Memorial. Chief consideration should be given to monumental beauty in the proposed Indiana war memorial, according to Fred H. Himmelburger, „ department commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, in a letter to posts of the State, findings of the veterans’ council of administration. The Council recommended the erection of one main building, with one large auditorium. The council said the monumental idea should not be sacrificed for utilitarian purposes.
