“Shriek” of Travesty Causes a Sensation
By WALTER D. HICKMAN. "THE SHRIEK” has arrived. He is Dudley Douglas with Elsie Pilcer in "Concentration.” The place of the sensation is the Palace. Douglas docs a butfesque travesty on Valentino, including the curtain talk regarding the “bad treatment" Valentino received in the movies. “I am the shriek,” cries Douglas doing his funny burlesque on Valentino. Douglas is dolled up in a dress suit with Argentine tendency, sash apd everything. Yes, even the trick boots are present. Douglas on the new bill at the Palace is giving his audiences some of the most delicious burlesque and travesty I have encountered this summer. During the Valentino number he sings something which sounds like “She Wants to Eat.” In this song he admits that his girl “eats a steak for dessert.” With Douglas is Elsie Pilcer, a dancer, and a foil for his outbreaks of travesty. She is a clever dancer and wears the most gorgeous costumes exhibited this summer at the Palace. To me this act is a knockout. Nearly forgot to tell you, they are assisted by Bernie Green, a violinist. Also by Jo Jo Dooley. Dooley has his own act. He does his turn from a box. He has a great assortment of wheezes and laughs. He even recites poetry. Slapstick comedy, but a real gem. You know, it takes an artist to produce honest-to-goodness slapstick. Good act. There is a whole lot of conversation in a sketch called “A Modern Diana.” The sketch is based upon a wrong theory. Ted Mac Lean and company undertake to put over some hopeless material. William Young and Charles Wheeler sing and play the piano. A rollerskating act opens the show. I missed

K. k7k. repudiated BY TOAIERS James and Downey Issue Statements, “I never have found any reason in my business association to make any distinction because of creed or color,” said Brandt C. Downey, former president 'of the Commercial National Bank, today. He was also speaking for Chester A. James, cashier of the National City Bank, in a statement concerning their repudiation of reported membership in the Ku-Klux Klan. “The only association we have had with the Klan was in August, 1921,” the statement said. “Some gentlemen came to us stating that they represented anew- organization. Each of us gave $lO and signed a certificate of donation w'hich said that we would have the privilege of being accepted as members after the usual routine of petitions, etc. We never took out membership.”
Ben Turpin Goes in for Serious Drama
■ Ifig A j jijaHKgJ 'w< ' BEN TURPIN.
If Mack Sennett’s cross-eyed star were to hand you his card, it is almost a certainty, now that he has undertaken the heavier type of emotions, his new mark of distinction would be printed somewhere on its face. Ben Turpin as a dramatist is a riot. In his latest Mack Senr.ett comedy special, "Where's My
