LOCKWOOD BREAKS NON-STOPRECORD Auto Driver Passes 120-Hour Mark. Handcuffed to the steering wheel of his automobile, with an assistant feeding him at intervals and talking to keep him awake, H. L. Lockwood of Hollywood, Cal., far surpassed all records for continuous automobile driving here today. At noon he had been driving more than 120 hours, according to officials of the Durant Motor Corporation, who are supervising the test. The previous record of 105 hours was made by Lockwood. Starting from New York last Thursday night, Lockwood drove through to Indianapolis and has been driving back and forth on the National road between Indianapolis and Richmond, Ind., since. Though visibly fatigued by the long strain, Lockwood today was still driving with a steady hand. Another car trails his auto and at intervals the men who assist him are given relief. He declares he would keep up the drive between Indianapolis and Richmond until Friday morning and then go to the Durant plant at Lansing, Mich., before stopping. The test car supplies Lockwood’s machine with oil and water on the run. Lockwood so far has not had any engine trouble. DWELLERS IN CITY FIGHT OFF GERMS

Disease Becomes Less, Doctor Thinks, NEW YORK, July 12.—City dwellers are becoming Immune to many diseases because of constant contact with the germs which produce them, said William H. Park, director of the research laboratories of the department of health, in making the observation that subways are an aid to health rather than a detriment. Subway travelers breathe in so many germs their systems become used to them, and the germs In traveling about from home to home lose some of their virulence, Dr. Park said. Scientific determination of the truth of this statement, Dr. Park explained, resulted from examination of public children for diphtheria germs. Every pupil was examined In the recent campaign to stamp out diphtheria and 400,000 were inoculated with antitoxin. The examination disclosed that many children had diphtheria germs. During the period they carried the. germs, deaths from diphtheria declined rapidly, partly due to the antitoxin and partly to natural immunization. In the first six months of 1923 only half as many children died from diphtheria as In the first six months of 1922, a result so encouraging that Dr. Park believes the disease may be definitely stamped out here. BOYS CHARGED WITH FORMING BANDIT GANG Police Say Thirty-Five Bicycles Were Stolen. By Times Special NEWCASTLE, Ind., July 11.—The innate human desire to be carried about on something besides his own legs, has led to formation of automobile bandit gangs among grown-ups. But seventeen Newcastle boys have formed a bicycle gang, according to police. Thirty-five bicycles have been stolen in the last three months. The bicycles were rebuilt, repainted and parts interchanged, according to confessions made to authorities. Action against the boys has been postponed until Juvenile Judge K. K. Kirk returns.
