GLOVE FANS SEE NIFTTPROGRAM Hoosier Bantam Champion Outpoints Boy From Boston. The open-air fisticuff show at Washington Park Thursday night proved a high-class affair and a large crowd enjoyed a big evening of entertainment on the part of the knuckledusters. “ In the main attraction Bud Taylor, Indiana bantam champ, outpointed Johnny Sheppard of Boston in ten rounds. Speed was the*-e throughout. Bud won because he carried the fight and scored the harder stingers. Johnny gave a great exhibition of footwork and head and body throwing, but he didn’t land enough punches. He made Bud miss many blows, but Taylor managed to pile up sufficient points to be entitled to thp verdict. The semi-wind-up between Billy Bong of Terre Haute and Jimmy Gordon of Middletown, Ohio, was a hard-fought draw. Gordon forced the fighting, and though he was clipped many times by Long, he never wilted and kept boring in. Both boys were tired at the conclusion of eight rounds. In the prelims Bobbie Hahn of Indianapolis outpointed Bud Templeton of Terre Haute in six rounds and Bobbie McGovern shaded Heinie McDuff in the same number of “innings." The Hahn-Templeton scrap was a splendid prelim. Frank Barry refereed all bouts. BRITISH SCULLER WINS Canadian Champ Defeated by Gollan, Conqueror of Hoover. WEIGHT OF YEARS RESTING HEAVILY ON JESSWILLARD Critic Thinks the Old Boy Lacks ‘Zip’ Needefd for 'Firpo Bout, By PAUL MALLON United Press Staff Correspondent YONKERS, N. Y., July 6.—Jess Willard doesn’t look so good. Battling against the physical deterioration of about forty years, the Kansas giant Is attempting to maintain the condition which enabled him to knock out Floyd Johnson in the New York milk fund benefit several weeks ago. He is scheduled to meet Luis Firpo in Jersey City the night of July 12. I Close observation of his training shows that he is, to all outward physical appearances, the Willard of old. His legs are lithe and trim. His big shoulders hold the same powerful muscles and his hands smack against his sparring partners with the oldtime thud. . Not the Same vZip” But Jess in his workout gives the impression that “something Is lacking Inside.” He doesn't seem to have the “lip.” It is one thing for a man of 40 long years to get himself down to physical perfection for one battle, but It Is quite another for him to maintain that condition for weeks. Jess never was a fancy dancer. He was always a slow, plugging worker, lacking brilliancy in boxing. But Thursday he seemed slower than ever. With only six days remaining before his big fight, which he wants to make a stepping stone for a match with Jack Dempsey, he had an “off day.” Easy Target in Ring His abdominal muscles are as strong as ever. He let Joe Cook an# Jimmy White throw a heavy medicine ball at him for three minutes, and though he was puffing at the finish, he took it. i In the sparring, however. Cook and White and a negro made him look easy. -.They landed repeatedly with lefts, and though they couldn't hurt the big boy, they showered him with blows on all sides.

INDIANS PERFORM IN NEW PARK Hi - SLUGGING BLUES Tribe Opens Lengthy Series of Six Games With Kansas City Team, ’By Times Special KANSAS CITY, Mo., July 6.—The Indians were to obtain their first glimpse of Kansas City’s new $400,000/ ball park this afternoon whgn they were scheduled to meet the Blues in the opening battle of a six-game series. The new plant is larger than the old park and it takes more of a wallopto get the ball over the fence. The first series the Blues played in the new grounds proved disastrous to them because they took on Milwaukee when the Brewers were speeding. With the coming of the Indians, however, the K. C. boys think they’ll get back in their stride: but they’re not sure of it by any means, the reason being the Hoosiers have been going strong recently. The Indians and Blues were to hook up in a single game today.
