LUMBER DEMAND TAXES CAPACITY OF LOCAL YARDS Skilled Cabinet Makers in Demand for Built-in Work, Notwithstanding the ever-increasing number of houses that are being constructed of brick, cement and stone, the lumber yards of Indianapolis are running to capacity and still unable to get their orders out on time, according to W. J. Goodwin, manager ‘ of the Broookside Lumber Company, j "Since the perfection of the builtin feature and its universal usage I there is a' tremendous lot of work ; done in our built-in department.” he | said. “The work is so heavy that it j has been necessary to have a dej partment to care for this alone. Oabij net makers during the last decade | had almost disappeared and today we find it very difficult to find men,who arc completely trained in this sort of work, which really requires infinite care in detail finishing. “There never has been anything j devised up to the present time, j that will take the place of wood in j interior finish and certainly there | never has been a time when the va- | riety of finishes and the artistic pos- ! sibillties of interior finishes have I equalled those of todaj. “One of the woods popular In this ; kind of work is gum. Until very recently this was not used at all because of the imperfection in the process of drying it; today it is scientifically dried, so that it is absolutely satisfactory and is capable of many very - beautiful treatments. “We are building another new shed in the attempt to keep pace with our steady growth; we can accommodate about a million and a half feet of | lumber with this new addition. Our | shipments are coming In rapidly; the J people in the South are attempting j to get all orders out in the shox-test time possible, for their working seaj son betweeen rainy seasons really Is j very short. "One of our late downtown jobs is the interior work on the new quarters i for the National Cash Register Comj pany. 120 S. Meridian St. The plans call for four fourteen-foot display j rooms with 3 sevemeen-foot display window. The work will be in birch, i with mahogany 'finish.” FOURNACE PROPERTY SOLD Thadd-'us Baker and Unknown Man Buy Kentucky Ave. Property. The extcerior cf the house is pleasing, with a green shingle root and a variegated brick chimney, furnishing a bit of color relief against the white walls. One enters a center hall with the large, welcoming living room on the right and the dining room on the left. From the hall a stairway leads to the second floor, which includes bedrooms of ample size, and a commodious bathroom FYiendly Living Room There is always a feeling of com fort where heavy upholstered furniture is used, especially if there is a fireplace. The tapestry of tho upholstering in this room is of a cheerful floral pattern in harmonizing subdued shades. DESIGNER OF HOME RELIEVESWORRIES Troublesome Details, Overseen by Expert, Aid Owner, The term, “designer and builder,” applies to a man whose' business seems to fill a big gap in building and construction work. It is his business to take full responsibility of tiic job. William F. Nelson, designer atxd builder, with offices at 4211 College Ave., is building a number of beautifiu new residences on the north side which reflect harmony of detail. These owners are appreciative of the fact that the full responsibility of the house has been taken by Nelson. They realize his experience better fits him to care for details in erecting a house. The bjue prints and all work from early stages to the last bit of finishing are supervised by him. “It is remarkably true of Indianapolis that the homes ijow being built art far superior in design and planning to those of a few years ago,” said Nelson. "People then were content to have a house of almost any type, hut today the owner wants a house that is convenient, artistic and built to incorporate the individual ideas of the owner. Brick and stucco seem to be leading in the materials used in the houses we are constructing. Many are planned after the general colonial plan which Is so essentially American. “The convenience round in the home cf today has never been equaled in homes built previous to this time, especially In the completeness of the kitchen and bathroom. The unification of the plan of the house Is also far superior to that previously constructed."

and music-room is comf<W*able and attractive. A desk adds to the charm and convenience of the room, end many pleasant hours are promised by a piano. Porch Gives Pleasure In the American house of today much attention is given to the arrangement of the porch. This porch, with its comfortable white furniture, is reached from the music room or from the exterior, and is located well to the rear of the house and to the south, to provide seclusion and comfort. Shrubbery is well grouped about it, and it is one of the most pleasing details of the whole plan. An inclosed porch on the rear provides a place for art ice box. The kitchen and breakfast-room are most attractively treated in French gray, and in keeping with the steady advancement in planning kitchens, this room is convenient with its built-in features. As one enters from the hall, a built-in china closet with a number of interesting pieces of china catches the eye. The upstairs rooms are conveniently planned and attractively furnished. The window arrangement in all the rooms is especially good for light and’ air.

COLORED BRICK!; BEAUTIFY HOMES W, W, Wise Points Out Advantages of Product, Durability, Jow upkeep, attractiveness, are qualities of brick that recommend it to the home builder of today. Pleasing effects are now possible by the use of brick in varying colors, ranging from the lightest buffs to deep red with occasional bronze greens. The choice of cplor is almost unlimited when one considers further difference that may be obtained by the use of different colored mortars. According to W. W. Wise, brick contractor, much depends on the quality of the bricks that go into a house. It does not pay to use bricks of an inferior grade, for not only does the finished Job present an unsatisfactory appearance, but there is so much waste connected with laying of poor bricks that the actual cash difference in the first cost of the bricks is much less than the figures would indicate. More and more houses are being constructed of brick because in addition to their permanancy, they afford a fireproof structure. This material improve® with age rather than lcsing Its freshness. LOCAL COMPANY FURNISHES HOME PLANS JN DETAIL Builders Corporation !s Aid to Designing House of Any Style, No matter how much study an individual has given to houses, or how definite his ideas may be In regard to furnishings, the average person does not have the working knowledge to enable him accurately to take care of the specifications of the house and other details that must be worked out before work can be started. Often he loses sight of the proper perspective in attempting to get in certain units that he especially desires, and the trues proportion of the house may be lost. For this reason the Indiana Builders Corporation, 1011 Consolidated building, fills a real need for the home builder. This firm will draw up plans according to he builders’ desire, and take care of all the details. It has been found that it saves money and worry’ to have one corporation take charge of the whole job, rather than to have several peeple taking care of sepaiate parts of it Many of the houses planned by this company have been of interesting character. These are planned as nearly as possible after the ideas of the owners, but are proportioned to be architecturally correct. A. Kimmick, president of this corporation. reports a brisk business in keeping with the general continued activity in building.

ERRORS COSTLY IN HEATINGRESIDENCE Proper Furnace Necessary for Family Health, i In building 'a house it is sometimes %-asy by careful management to lessen cost without seriously interfering with the quality of the finished house, but one item that affords little room for cost cutting is the heating plant. The furnace should be chosen with great care, and a certain amount of knowledge is needed' to install the right type of furnace. There is a type of furnace for every house that is built, if. the owner will make inquiries. Daufel Brothers, 1133 Hoefgen St., make a speciality of the Sunbeam Furnace, and find that the heating ventilating and air moistening systems that are incorporated in this furnace give the home owner complete satisfaction. The climate in tfeis country is so varied as to make necessary a furnace fnpable of variation in producing heat. t should also provide for a ventilating system to furnish the house with circulating air with natural moisture. A furnace must be capable of getting all of he heat producing units out of the fuel it burns, or the cost of upkeep is greater than necessary. This firm, in addition to selling and installing Sunbeam furnaces, those equipped with pipes as well as pipeless ones handles all kinds of sheet metal work required in the construction of a. house-
