HARDING GIVEN PICTURE OEM IN TRAILPAGEANT President Praises Oregon Pioneers and Rides'in Stage Coach, By United Xetcs MEACHAM, Ore., July 4.—The glamour that hangs memory of the “good old days” of the pioneers descended Tuesday upon Meacham, and the old West lived again. Joe Wood, "old time stage skinner,” cracked his whip and his six horses stepped out smartly over the Oregon trail. Inside the coach sat a man in blue serge and white flannels, waving his straw hat. President Harding, coming to Meacham in 1923, was transported as in the days of 1843, when men and women blazed the trail through the forest. Post Is Pictured All the pageantry of the West was marshaled to give him a picture of the past. The President watched it all with deep interest and then, in a speech, paid tribute to the dauptless spirit of the pioneers, asserting while that spirit lives, America will remain great. Meacham is not a town. It is only the summit of the Blue Mountains, where the Oregon trail crosses. No such throng has ever been here a.gathered today in a flr-dotted meadow to greet Harding and participate with him in the celebration of the eightieth anniversary of their first emigrant train and in the dedication of the Oregon Trail Highway. The history of the trail blazers was painted in a pageant in which modern 'Oregonians, assisted by some of the very pioneers who came soon after the way was opened, took the parts of famous ones like Kit Carson, Buffalo Bill, Jim Bridger, Marcus Whitman, the Martyred missionary: Ezra Meeker and others whose names are linked with the Oregon country. Lunches on Bear Meat The President lunched on bear steak in a tent on a hillside. He liked the bear meat, so he said. Anyway, his appetite was excellent. Governors Pierce of Oregon, Hart of Washington and Moore of Idaho: Senators Stanfield and McXary of Oregon, several members of Congress and a large delegation of citizens from Portland and Tacoma helped welcome Mr. Harding.
CROPS REPORTED IN GOODCOHDITION Farmers Pool Labor for Harvest, Corn planting has been practically completed in Indiana, according to George C. Bryant, agricultural statistician for Indiana of the United States Department of Agriculture, in his semi-monthly crop report, issued today. The report stated wheat and rye cutting began about June 16. Oats seem to be in better condition in the northern part of the State than in the southern. Fruits are being well cared for. Livestock is in good condition. Bryant stated that farm hands are few, but that the farmers will har>veet their crops without serious loss by pooling their labor. General conditions throughout the Middle States are good, according to (Bryant. The hay harvest has com- ! menced. All truck gardening seems to be above the average. Building Permits M E.
