“Heart of Maryland” Is Good Movie; “Bavu” Has Enough Drama for 6 Films
By WALTER D. HICKMAN. WELCOME BACK the good old rr.flcdrama days. The curfew shall not ring tonight. Remember those good old melodramatic lines? Os course, you do, and if you don't, you may become acquainted with §them by visiting the Ohio this week. There you will see Catherine Calvert holding on to the hammer of a bell in a church bel fry. The curfew did not ring that night. This is the climax of a movie version of Bel as c o's “The Heart of CATHERINE Maryland.” The CALVERT story Is just good, old-fash-ioned Civil War melodrama, acted by people who know how tc act and directed by a director who knows his business! Miss Calvert, Crane Wilbur and William Collier, Jr., are responsible for most of the good acting. “The Heart of Maryland” Is a welcomed relief from the regular run of movie food. It is a costume play, yes. but the characters are real human beings. In this story you will find General Lee and other characters of history acted as If they were human beings. Those who remember the success of “The Heart of Maryland” years ago will welcome the opportunity of seeing this good old story again. There is a majestic something about this story which we do not find present in the modern melodrama. A big love story is played before a background of war. Many of the older playgoers will recall Instances during the Civil War, when Southern girls wanted to be loyal to the South, but their hearts were beating for loved ones in the Union Army. Catherine Calvert has been intrusted with the Maryland role. She makes Maryland a lovable girl who fights to be loyal to the South, but who fails when matters of the heart are at stake. From a scenic standpoint “The Heart of Maryland” is a picture of great beauty. The battle scenes are well handled because they are handled as Incidents of the story and not as the chief items of interest. War is just a background before which a moving and powerful love story is acted. I am not afraid to recommend “The Heart of Maryland” at the Ohio this week. The bill includes music by the Schuyler Alward orchestra. Round 11 of “Fighting Blood." and a news weekly. -I- -I- -!- There Is a Bunch of Drama in “Bavu” You must come over to tha Apollo J this week and see “Bavu” if you rel-1 ish tons of drama. The truth is there is enough drama in this one picture for at least six , movies. And the acting! Nothing better ' rfom a cruel dramatic line before the i from a cruel dramatic line before the American public today. If Myou are not afraid of stage realism then don’t miss “Bavu,” at some people, “Bavu” might too re,*;.* one srone 1n Hip Jm Ha’ u s attic Kajpiy eer in my memor> and my dreams : for months to corn*. . throne, has a great moment of realism when he discovers blood on the floor. Carefully, Bavu traces the blood drop by drop to a vault where the stolen treasures -of a noble Rusj sian family are stored. Bavu thinks ! that his political rival is concealed in the unfinished vault. Gleefully, he ; orders his assistants to seal up the vault. He gloats as he watches his next intended victim, a Russian princess, plead for mercy for the man she loves, who is Bavu’s political ; enemy. Bavu will not yield, but he discovers too late that the person in the vault is not his political enemy. When Bavu makes this discovery—well, you have some of the strongest, realistic acting ever reflected on the screen. And the climax, when Bavu sinks to his watery grave, is another realistic shock which will linger in your memory. I honestly believe that Wallace Beery as Bavu has contributed to the screen some of the best dramatic acting that the screen has ever presented. I think Bavu is a realistic masterpiece. I must not forget the work of Estelle Taylor as the Russian Princess; Sylvia Breamer as the "friend” of Bavu and Josef Swickard as a Russian nobleman. See “Bavu” if you enjoy realistic drama. I think it is a dramatic treat. Marguerite de la Motte and Marjorie Daw are cast as the wandering daughters who give their fond parents so much worry. William V. Mong is cast as one of the worried fathers, and he about W'alks away with this “comedy" when he decides to become "modern.” And when father starts in to step to the tune of "Shake Your Shimmie," Instead of “The Holy City,” well, father causes his wife and his creditors to worry. It might be remarked at this time and place that the wandering daugh r ters do not wander too far from the beaten path. And we might add. “It is the fathers who always pay the bills." “Wandering Daughters” is far from be a great movie, but it has a funny comedy twist. Take as a comedy and not as drama. Buster Keaton is present on the bill in anew comedy. "The Love Nest. ’ Keaton has his own brand of funmaking. There is one great comedy scene where Keaton goes fishing on a target located some place in the ocean. Several big hattle ships open fire on the target. The result is. a mighty funny scene. plays a forcible part in the Isis bill for the first half of this week. As David Darby of the Northwest Mounted Police, he portrays the best part of that famous service. David's brother, a weakling, is also in the service, and the older brother is called upon to use all his efforts to keep him from disgracing the uniform. There is a girl in the story, and Laura La Plante makes this character charming and winsome. David’s courtship of her is an unusual and entertaining one. There is another girl in love with David, a dance hall character. David’s brother kills the owner of the dance hall, and David is commissioned to bring him in dead or alive. David brings him to face trial, and assumes the blame for the crime to shield him. But the dancer testifies that he is r.ct guilty, and the weakling I*~ made to suffer for his crime. David wins his- girl, and a satisfactory ending is achieved. Eve Sothern plays the part of the dancer and Harold Goodwin is the brother. Edith Yorke. Alfred Fisher, and Harry Carter are also in the cast. A comedy completes the bill, which will be followed the latter part of the week by Owen Moore's farce, “The Poor Simp.” (By an Observer'. -I- -I- -I15roadway Re-Opens Asa Picture House “The Slave Mart.’ featuring James Cruze and Marguerite Snow, which is being shown at the Broadway all this week, fails to live up to the sensational publicity. This picture was evidently made years ago, when Miss Snow was In the height of her popularity. The story Is an ordinary sequence of events, with some rather exciting action at the first. James Cruze and Marguerite Snow will be entertaining to those who knew them on the screen a few years ago. It is also interesting to note the differences in photography, style of dress and acting in this film. (By Oserver). -|- -j* Tom Mi x Does Some Fast Stepping Tom Mix wears his customary riding breeches through his latest picture, "Stepping Fast,” which is playing at Mister Smith’s this week, but appears on a horse only at the first of the picture. In one scene, he combines his khaki with a. sailor's blouse and hat. For this film takes Mix to China and back in his efforts to find a band of thieves and murderers. Mix is the owner of a ranch in California. He rescues Durant a rich and eccentrio curio collector from the band, and. later when Durant is killed i by the gang, is entrusted with the j secret of his hidden treasure. Durant’s daughter is ip China and the fight for the treasure centers i around her. The villain of the story, ably played by Donald McDonald, seems to get the decision in every round but the last, when Mix stages a winning fight with the gang near the hidden treasure. And he also wins Duran’t other treasure. There is some “fast stepping” in this piece, and Mix Is helped to do it by an able and well-chosen cast. Claire Adams is the girl. Edward Pell. Edward Jobson, Ethel Wales and George Seigman complete the cast. —(By on Observer.) •I- -|- -IThe legitimate attractions on viewtoday include: “Nice People." at the Murat: "The Night Cap." at English's: Ed and Tom Hickey, at the Lyric, and “Miss Mystery.” at the Palace.
