Furnaces, like all other things me chanleal, should have a period of rest after a long period of strenuous service, and should have a thorough overhauling before they are | called upon to serve at capacity over I another long stretch of time. According to Hyman Escol of the Tdeal Healing Company. 2439 Central Ave., this very vital attention to their furnaces should not he negelcte.l. "There are in Indianapolis only a i few companies able to give satlsfac- | tory repair service for heating j plants.” he said. "There are approximately 80.000 homes in Indianapolis I with about 60.000 furnaces, and unless these furnaces are repaired during the summer a majority of them will nor be ready for firing next fall. “It takes expert knowledge to repair furnaces properly, just as it takes expert knowledge to Install furnaces. Re pair men. operating for a few concerns, cannot take care of all th© repair work in Indianapolis if it is all left until a few weeks before cold weather. “Last year, just previous to winter, we had 250 orders to repair furnaces Immediately. It was an absolute impossibility for our company to take care of all these orders. In several cases doctors called and asked that certain bonus on our list have preference because there was illness in the family. Serious situations of this sort, as well as a great deal of unnecessary Inconvenience, could be prevented easily and completely if homeowners would only have their furnaces repaired now." LIQUID DESTROYS HOUSEHOLD PESTS Preparation Kills Bugs That Infest Homes, Four pests cause American housei wife an endless amount of trouble. I The ruinous bull moth, as near as it can be traced, was imported from Europe at the beginning of the World War. Since it has done a great amount of damage to clothing. The larvae form in closets, trunks, etc. In leas than seven days the, trouble begins. The moths are capable of ruining a suit in two days. The silver moth, commonly called the Ash moth, Is a pest that Inhabits concrete walls and comes up Into the rooms. It plays havoc with rugs and carpets. The third pest, the cock roach, breeds and lurks around water pipes and frequently makes its home In cupboards, where it feeds on sweets. It likes offices where there is a supply of stationery so it can eat the gum used to stick the flaps of envelopes. The fourth pest, the bed bug, is sometimes called the chinch bug. It is probably the worst of all the insects, as it inhabits the wood of old buildings and is hard to annihilate. Albert G. Maas, SI Virginia Ave., has been successful in exterminating all these pests with his own prepara- j tion known as "Sudden Death.” This is a liquid used in a sprayer \ whioh "gases” the insect, thereby: routing It from its hiding place and ! destroying it. The liquid is harmless! to human beings, I

BRICK BUILDING IS REPORTED ON INCREASE HERE Varied Artistic Effects Not Possible in Frame Construction, Ftnce the time of our pilgrim forefathers brick has been used as a building material for homes in America. hut never before has this ma tnria! been used in such quantities as it is today This country's natural wealth of high grade brick making ' clays was quickly discovered, and brick manufacture has been developed until now it is one of the most important industries of the Nation. James R. Adams of James B. Adams & Son Cos.. 321 Lemcke Bldg., says th© increase In use of brick was due in large part to its permanency, as well ns to the artistic efTect that may he achieved by Its use. “The beauty of hrick is distinctive and varied,” he said. “High grade brick now come in fancy designs, ranging in color from ox blood red, through soft buffs and grays with evon a golden green tint.” he said The graduation In color is caused by slight differences in the chemical composition and by the varying heats to which brick units are subjected. In building it Is necessary to see that bricks of uniformity both in size and in color are used. "Another thing that must be em phaslzed in building with brick Is the mortar joint. This mortar not only I brings out the color of the brick but j brings out the pattern as well. For this reason various combinations of bricks and mortars are displayed in our offices, so that th© customer may soe from these concrete examples just how the walls of his home shall look. "Properly designed, a brick house may be one of extraordinary beauty. If. will be a source of pride throughout the owner's life, and at the same time provide an economical building in which to invest his savings. Today we are building small houses as well as large houses of brick. Many owners who are building house© and paying for t.iem in installments feel that, houses of brick are cheaper because their upkeep is less.” Sheffield, England, is still credited with making the best steel In the world.
