WHITFIELD CLEWS APPEAR IN STATE ► AS POLK SEARCH Slayer of Cleveland Officer Reported Seen Here Thursday Night, Search for John Whitfield, alleged slayer of a Cleveland policeman on May 18, continued today as reports of persons answering his description continued to be received by Indianapolis police. Chief Platt of New Albany telegraphed the detective department that his officers had been showing Whitfield’s picture in hotels. Thursday night two traveling men at a Louisville hotel said they saw Whitfield Thursday morning between Henryville and Scottsburg. He was alone and was driving a five-passenger green Buick car. City Councilman Otto Ray, called police Thursday night and told them a man and a woman stopped at the Casino Gardens, and asked the road to Chicago. They left immediately. The man was said to answer the description of Whitfield. Lieutenant Anderson and a squad drove three miles out the Lafayette Pike in search of the suspect. A few days ago Whitfield and the woman were reported to have stopped at an Anderson garage. >MANY hurt in industry Large Increase in Accidents and Deaths Shown in Report. Almost 800 more industrial accidents occurred in Indiana during May than in the previous month. Twentysix deaths are recorded, as against ten for April, a report of Miss Helen Troutman, statistician for the State industrial board, showed today. In May, 4.673 accidents were recorded, including 4.171 temporary total disabilities. There were 393 temporary partial disabilities and eightytwo dismemberments. Women injured numbered 166. The automobile industry claimed two victims by death, coalmining four and iron and steel work two. FOOD PRICES STATIONARY Indianapolis Market Shows Little Retail Change in Month. Retail food prices remained almost stationary in Indianapolis from April 15 to May 15. according to figures compiled by the Bureau of Labor statistics at Washington An increase of less than one-half of 1 per cent was recorded. Girl Arrested After Crash Charges of assault and battery were placed against Miss Mortense Hahn, 17, 1927 N. Delaware St., after an automobile she was driving struck a bicycle which Ralph Gary, 16, of 319 Fulton St., was riding near Washing ton and Meridian Sts. Gary, a Postal Telegraph messenger, suffered injuries to his left elbow. The bicycle was badly damaged.
