OBJECTS TO FETE GAMING American Legion Post Requested to Change Methods, Observance of State laws that prohibit operation of wheels of fortune, selling' of chances and other gambling devices St the French fete of the Irvington Post. American Legion in July, is asked in a letter sent the post by the Meridian "W. C. T. U., it was learned today. Following is part of the letter: "Gentlemen: The Meridian W. ( . T. U., understanding that you are planning to give a French fete again this summer in Ellenberger woods, wish respectfully and in all kindliness to ask that you do not include in your program the operation of wheels of fortune and selling of chances. While we thoroughly sympathize with the Legion and wish to cooperate with it, we do not believe that our State laws should be disregarded even that gcod may come." "I received the letter Monday nighty and will take it up with the post tonight," O. R. Olsen, 378 Downey Ave., post commander, said today. *'We had the gambling devices at our other fete. That is the way we make our money. We may just lef the whole thing drop.” Olsen said he was expressing his personal conviction, as no official action has been taken. COLUMBUS MAN WEDS Daughter of Washington Millionaire Is Bride. B United Press COLUMBUS. Ind., .Tune 6.—The old home town rejoiced today in the successful culmination of the suit of William E. Doeller, Beau Brummel of Columbus, for the hand of Miss Catherine Louise Littauer, daughter of a multimillionaire glove manufacturer in Washington. Announcement of the marriage of Dceller and Miss Littauer in New York was received by his mother Monday. Doller's tuit was frowned upon by the father Miss Littauer, who did not believe the young man had the money- to keep her in the style befitting her social position. The young couple abandoned their plans temporarily until Doeller could convince a doubting father that he was worthy. BURGLAR WALKS RIGHT IN And Out Again, With Jewels, SlO and Canadian Coins. The home of W. C. Bracherdlne, of 151 E. Fall Creaek Blvd., was entered by a burglar through an unlocked rear door Monday night while the family was away. Braeherdine today told police the thief carried away a 545 gold ring with a diamond and two ruby sets, a black ring and a diamond ring, each valued at S3O; a brooch, three Canadian gold coins, and $lO. Corporation Assessment Starts Work of assessing more than 3,000 corporations by the county board of review began today. County Assessor J. C. Douglas is president and Leo K. Fesler, county auditor, is secretary. Other members are: County Treasurer Ralph A. Lemcke, A. H. Wahl and Claude E. McElwalne. The two latter were appointed by Circuit Court. MRS. MARY E. PARKHURST FUNERAL WEDNESDAY Services Will Be Held at Home Witli Burial at Crown Hill. Last rites for Mrs. Mary E. F’arkhurst, 80, who died Monday will be held 2:30 p. m. Wednesday at her residence, 3122 W. Michigan St. The Rev. George C. Chandler, pastor of Memorial Baptist Church of which Mrs. Parkhurst was a member, will officiate. Buriai wiil be in Crown Hill. Mri. Parkhurst was born in Ohio County, Ky. At the age of 22, she movSi with her parents to Indianapolis. Surviving Mrs. Parkhurst are two daughters, Mrs. Ora Levi and Mrs. J. E. Fultz, and one brother, Theodore Pollerd, all of Indianapolis. Eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive. COUNTY LEGION PROTESTS Action of State Department oil Appointments Opposed. Marion County post commanders of the American Legion will protest action of the State department In appointing a committee to supplant a local committee in charge of transportation to the national convention in San Francisco, it was said today. The matter will be discussed at a closed meeting of Marion County commanders tonight in the Board„of Trade Building. Commanders also may attack action of James Duncan, seventh District executive committeeman, in appointing Willard fv Boyle his temporary substitute on the Ktate executive committee, persons close to the leaders said. Thompson, who won fame during the war as a battlefield photographer, is under arrest today on Federal charge of impersonating a United States naval officer. INDIANA GUARD WILL START TRAINING SCHOOL Four-Day Instruction Periods Are Planned for Men. Four-day schools of instruction for officers and enlisted men of the Indiana National Guard will be held beginning next week, according to announcements mailed today by Harry B. Smith, adjutant general. Officers and enlisted men will be paid for a period of five days and will ! be allowed round-trip transportation i to schooling places.
