PASTORS ATTACK ACTS OF CHURCH CONVENTION HERE Chicago, Detroit and Brooklyn Presbyterian Leaders Open Fight, Various actions taken by the Presbyterian General Assembly here last week, today were the target for a storm of criticism from various parts of the country. They were vigorously assailed Sunday in sermons preached by leading Presbyterian ministers in Chicago. Detroit and New York. Adoption of the resolution backed by William Jennings Bryan that clergymen and laymen sign a pledge to abstain from liquors aroused the wrath of Chicago pastors. "I shall refuse to sign such a card,” the Rev. G. C. Whitsett, pastor of the South Chicago Presbyterian Church, said. “It is an iusult." Fosdiok Defended A strong defense of the Rev. Harry' Kmerson Fosdick of New York was rebuked by the assembly for alleged denial of the virgin birth- of Christ, was made by the Rev. Dr. Charles William Cochran, pastor of the Woodward Ave. Presbyterian Church of Detroit. “The tendency of the Christian Church to ape politicians by regarding freedom of thought or speech as a crime is most unfortunate and stupid,” he said. The Rev. Dr. L. Mason Clarke, for twenty years pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn, N. Y., also attacked the action of the assembly. Pastor Admits Unbelief “The assembly declared.” he said, “that It was necessary for a Presbyterian minister to believe in the inerrancy of scripture, the Virgin birth of Christ, a particular theory of Christ's death on the cross, the physical resurrection of Christ, and the genuineness of miracles attributed to Him." “In all frankness. I do not believe one of the five points.”
