HARMONY IRKS CLOSING SESSIONS OF PRESBYTERIANS General Assembly Ends With Factions Knitted—Fosdick Case Not Dead Issue, By -WALTER D. HICKMAN Hoping that peace and harmony will follow action on Important church governmental and doctrinal questions during the 135th general assembly which was officially dissolved late Thursday at Tomlinson Hall after a seven-day session, delegates today were returning to their homes. Sixty-six commissioners, headed by Dr. William Pierson Merrill of New York, signed a protest against the action of the assembly in instructing the presbytery of New York to compel Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick of the First Presbyterian Church, New York City, to preach only doctrines in accord with Presbyterian doctrines and confession of faith. This proposed overture asks that the form of church government be amended to permit ‘‘hiring of special preachers in special cases of which the presbytery shall fc'j the judge.” At the closing session, Dr. George Alexander made a plea for harmony and advised the Assembly that Its mandate on the Fosdick matter would be carried out. He called attention to the fact that Dr. Fosdick was a great preacher who has brought thousands to Christ. Assembly Praises City * Praise for the way Indianapolis treated the commissioners was expressed by officials and the entire assembly. Praise was bestowed upon the local committee, the newspapers for the fair reports, to the city police and firemen who were constantly on duty and to the churches. At 4:14 p. m. Moderator Wishart declared the 1923 assembly dissolved and called the assembly to meet next year in Grand Rapids, Mich. CONTEST FOR POPULARITY Features Close of Colored Y. Carnival and Exliiibt. About 1.500 persons attended the Negro Business Men’s Exhibit and Carnival at the Colored Y. M. C. A. this week. The exhibit closes tonight with a Popularity Contest for girls and women. Oliver Martin will be in charge. Exhibits include coffins, dental sup plies, men's furnishings, women's wearing apparel, cement blocks, fuel supplies and house furnishings, all handled by colored business men.
