HIGHER PAY LOOMS CERTAIN FOR MANY EMPLOYES OF CITY Council Will Be Asked to Make Increases Based on Committee Reports, Many employes. Including labor, will be given a raise In wages of rom 10 to 15 per cent If a readjusted wage scale decided upon by the council at a special meeting Thursday night is adopted. Recommendations followed In general those recommended by the council committee who have been working with department heads on the ' question. A boost in the labor scale was general for all departments, although heads of the departments and other officials were not given as large Increases as they asked. Salaries In the city engineer’s department will be raised. John L. El\jiott, city engineer, stated that engineers here were paid less than those of other cities. Melnottee Bebee. assistant engineer, was recommended for a raise of $3,000 to $3,600. Building Department Changes Rmployes of the building department were recommended for a general increase with the exception of Francis F. Hamilton, building commissioner. Anew position of assistant commissioner was created at ?3,000. Mechanics, clerks, inspectors typists end labor receiving less than $1,500 a year were recommended for a general increase In all departments, amounting to about 10 per cent. John W. Walker, superintendent of street cleaning was recommended for r raise of from $2,400 to $3,000; Mrs. Mary Pearl Riddle, chief Inspector of weights and measures, from SI,BOO to $2,000. Councilmen indicated that the salary of William T. Bailey, assistant city attorney might be lowered if euch steps were legal. No Increa.se for Police Salaries of police were not discussed. Recently the committee of the council working on wage adjustments stated that the department was top-heavy with officers. After one year of service privates In the fire department will become regular firemen which entitles them to about 50 cents a day more. Members of the council said that recommendations were to be incorporated in the form of an ordinance to be introduced at the next council meeting. ere Are They?
