VETS’ COMPLAINTS ARE ATTRIBUTED 10 MENTAL CONDITION U, S, Doubts Stories From Marion That Patients Are Mistreated, By JOHN CARSON. Times Staff Correspondent. WASHINGTON. -May 25 —The Veterans’ Bureau has had stories of cruel treatment of patients at the National Sanitarium at Marlon, Ind., similar to those related by ex-service men in letters to the Indianapolis Times. Government Investigators have made inquiries and the Veterans’ Bureau has ordered certain improvements, but the Veterans’ Bureau is inclined to believe that most of the stories can be attributed to mental condition of the patients. "We have those stories all the time.’’ said Dr. A. J. Mclntyre, chief executive officer of the medical division of the Veterans’ Bureau. “That type of patient often believes that tr.nif one is hounding him or troubling him. Ho thinks other people are listening to him and that they have :t in for him He believes he is being badly treated. Investigators on Job "We have Investigators on the toes I of these officials all the time to see that the patients get the best possible i reatment. There may be cases where a patient is badly treated, but Investigation will show they are usually less thftn one-half of 1 per rent. "In the case of the Marion hospital, we did compel them to improve their service, to add to the personnel and to make for better conditions general ly. They have done It and there is an improvement.” Pay for Each Patient "We pay them an allowance for each patient.” he explained. “We did spend some money there to provide for this service, but now we pay in accordance with the number of patients.” Other officials of the Veterans Bureau insisted that Dr. William

Mac Lake, commandant, had a "perfect right” to 'refuse permission of investigators to look into conditions at the hospital although they added that “had they been in his place” they would have invited an inquiry’. "Do your investigators go into the personal cases of the patients?” Dr. Mclntyre was asked. “Certainly,” he replied. "Every patient is invited to tell anything he desires to tell and our men get all the information they can.” POLICE GET NEW TIRE Colored Man Runs When Police Approach.
