CHINESE SOLDIERS ARE DEALING WITH BAND OF BRIGANDS Action Arouses Distrust of Foreigners—Americans Retain Morale, By RAT G. MARSHAL!., United Press Staff Correspondent PEKING, May 22. —Foreigners who travel through the Shantung bandit area are taking their lives In their hands, according to a warning by the legations of the powers. Even soldiers guarding the railway line are distrusted because of their constant contact with emissaries of the outlaws. Trains are traversing the Shantung-Tien Tsin route only by daylight. Meanwhile American and other captives remain on the mountain top, where they are held for ransom, this being their third week of captivity. They are surrounded by bandits, many of whom are afflicted with infectious disease. To date the morale of the hostages is unbroken, despite the contact with these brigands and the fact their new camp is in more depressing surroundings than the first. Foreign commercial bodies are providing large supplies of food for the outlaws, so they will refrain from stealing the prisoners’ supplies. Lad is Injured Charles Biglow, 2002 Ralston Ave., was slightly injured today when he was struck by an automobile at 'Twentieth St., and Ralston Ave. The boy ran in front of the car, driven by Arthur Winter, 2020 Hovey St. lie was taken home. Wholesale Murder Denied £]j United Press LAREDO, Texas, Mai' 22.—Customs officers here and in Nuevo Laredo branded as false today reports that thirty-two bodies supposed to be those of Italians and other foreigners murdered by Mexican? had been found in the River near here.
