MOTHER’S LOVE IS PUREST Hi BEST, PASTOR DECLARES Local Churches Honored Motherhood in Special Sermons and Prayer, "Next to the name of Jesus there is no word so sweet as that of mother,” Rev. Charles H. Gunsolus declared in a Mother’s day sermon at the Brightwood Congregational Church Sunday night. “■Who can fathom the depth of a mother’s love?” he asked. “There Is no friendship so pure, so devoted. The wild storm of adversity and the bright sunshine of prosperity are all alike to her. However unworthy we may be of that affection, a mother never ceajwe to love her erring child. "There is no velvet so soft as a mother’s lap, no rose so lovely as her smile and no path so tiowery as that Imprinted with her footsteps."The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world. The mother's heart is the child's schoolroom. What Would Home Be Without Mother? “Home would not be home if it were rot for mother’s love and presence. God could not be everywhere, and therefore Ho made mothers. It’s a wonderful thing, a mother's love. No one can understand and love like mother. "Great men become great because they believed in and loved mother. Lincoln said, ’All that I am or ever hope to he I owe to my angel mother.’ President Garfield at his inauguration laid all his honors at his mother's feet. Napoleon said that the great want of the French nation was pure 1 and holy mothers. Many Ministers Enter Ministry Because of Mother Dr. Talmadge once said that 120 ; clergymen, being together, began to, compare experience. It was found that 100 out of the 120 assigned as the instrumentality of their conversion, a Christian mother. “Only through the prayers of mothers can the world be saved. "When Jesus turned the water into wine, his mother was there and shared in His glory. When Jesus was crucified, his mother stood by the cross and shared his disgrace. "Thus ever is mother willing to he with us in happiness and success. In time of trouble, she Is the one who never forsakes. "Among the brightest and fairest of all angels will be mother,” Rev. Gunsolus said. BULGIN SPEAKS AT TABERNACL Special Program Marks Obs*rvance of Mother's Day. The Ladies’ Sterling Quartet sang “My Mother's Prayer” ; while the flowers were presented. £>r. E. J. Two years of effort to establish a new form of government for the Presbyterian Church of the United f States will remain undecided when the General Assembly holds Its annual meeting here. May 17-24. In the face of keen opposition to certain proposals In the new plan of government, It is expected another year will have to pass before any definite action will result. This Is the opinion of influential members of the Presbyterian Church who will take part In the General Assembly here. According to these individuals, even though the necessary number of 151 affirmative votes of the presbyteries of the country are gained for the new plan, amendments will be offered at the General Assembly, so that the presbyteries would have to vote again on the plan as amended during the coming year. Its adoption, therefore, is not expected for at least another year. New Government Plan Is Called “Overture E” The new plan of government is termed "Overture E” and prorides for
County Clerk Gets ‘s7’ Varieties of Questions
The Oracle of Delphi in Ancient Greece, which was supposed to answer everything asked it, never had more varied questions put to it as Albert H. Losche, Marion County clerk, receives daily from all points of the United States. A resident of Wyoming, whose family were om-o Hooslers, wants to know what her greatgrandfather's first name was, if any; what his wife's maiden name was, and where they lived baek in Ohio, and whether Crawfordsville is not a part ot Indianapolis since Lew Shank hatched the Greater Indianapolis idea. Following is part of the letter she sent from Casper, Wyo.: Family History Sought "Kind Sir: I wish the full name of my great-grandfather Mellvane, judge of Indianapolis about 1820. What was his wife's maiden name, and where i was their former home In Ohio? “Is there a tecord of the birth of Eliza Jane Mcllvar.e? I was told she was horn in Crawfordsville, about fifty miles from Indianapolis, but not ' being able to find the city on the map, i presume it is a part of the city of Indianapolis. “Could you give me the name cu. William Martin, who owned thi orI chard of Crown Hill cemtery, or tha L 1 of one of his children?” Another plea received this week from a man in Milwaukee runs as follows: Ex-Soldier \Vorrird "Dear Sir: "I want to know if I am married.^ “While at Ft. Harrison during the war I kept company with an Indianapolis girl. During most of the courting I was under the influence ot liquor, and just have faint recollections about the matter. “During such state of intoxication it may have been possible that I married the woman. I new have a real girl whom I want to marry, and who wants to marry me, but 1 can’t tike any chances on bigamy. Will you trace the records?” Losche said that he sent for the name of the supposed Indianapolis wife and the year the knot might have been spliced. f/otter in German One letter came In German from a Michigan City patriot, who withheld her name. Many people up there will bear watching, the letter says, as they are riding around in cars and not working. She suspects Volstead is be-

the establishment of a general council, a central organization to have supervision over the spiritual and material interests of the boards and agencies of the church. The general council would, in short, serve as a mediating agency, or clearing agency, for all questions of major Importance to the church. Opposition to the proposed plan is centered against the provision to provide for a paid chairman whose term would be five years, the criticism being that this would set up an individual authority repugnant to the spirit of the democratic organization of the church. Opposition is also expressed against centralization of authority in the hands of a few. Many Noted l eaders to Speak at Assembly William Jennings Bryan, elected commissioner to the General Assembly this year, will be the principal speaker at the popular mass meeting on Sunday afternoon. May 20. Another figure of national prominence at the same meeting will bo Secretary Hubert Work of the Department of the Interior, who has been invited to address the commissioners. *•
ing mistreated and requests a personal investigation by the Marion County clerk. Whether lie should wear false whiskers or not was not stated. An old-timer, who left these parts twenty-five years ago, writes from Elks City, Okla., and wants to know whether the old home place of three acres, “six miles west of the courthouse and one-fourth mile north.” has been sold, stating that he could use the money “very handily” now. Tries to .Ynswer All No trace of the place was found on tax records. ’ Efforts are made to answer all such questions, Losche said, even though it entailed going to the fourth floor of the courthouse and digging into records of the old Common Pleas Court of Marion County of more than a century ago.

Syrup Pepsin Helps Nature Give Relief
Try it wbrn • Laxative i> seeded and tee the wonderful remits IT is not necessary to take a violent physic for so simple an ailment as constipation. Yet many thoughtless parents give mercury iu the form of calomel, and coal-tar in the #form of phenol when a natural vegetable compound like Dr. Caldwell’s Syrup Pepsin will do the work equally well \ and without danVtaw ger. People should realize that mercury may salivate and in certain conditions loosen the teeth; that phenolphthalcin, by whatever name known and however disguised in candy, may cause dermatitis and other skin eruptions; that salt waters and powders may concentrate the blood, dry up the akin and cause lassitude. You can take Dr. Caldwell's Svrun Pepsin yourself or give it to a babe in arms, as thousands of mothers do every day, with the confidence that it is the safest and best medicine you can use for constipation and such complaints. A teaspoonful will relieve you over night even if the constipation has been chronic for.
