THESE PEDESTRIANS 1 TAKE NO CHANCES ON BEING HELD UP Hunt for 'Bandits’ Leads to Explanation—All’s Well That Ends Well! Two men today told how they were almost held up by "armed" bandits at South St., near Delaware St., at 10 p. m .Thursday. Elwln Alexander, 22, of 2232 N. Pennsylvania St., saw a man approaching him. He started to leave. “Wait a minute,” called the stranger. “Don’t run or I’ll shoot.” “Go ahead and shoot,” answered Alexander as he increased his speed in the direction of a gasoline filling station, where ne telephoned the police. Sergeant Wilkerson and Detectives Stump and Samuels went to the scene and heard Alexander’s story. One block west they found Clinton Puckett, 19, of 22 E. Henry St., surrounded by four men “whom he was I telling how a man had just tried to hold him up by pointing a revolver at him frpm his coat pocket. The men were just joining Puckett in the search for the bandit when the emergency squad arrived.

Garden Space Given to 500 More than 590 vacant lots have been furnished persons wishing to conduct gardens by the Patriotic Gardeners' Association this season. Harry Miesse, secretary, says: “Although the demand for the lots has been greater than the supply, we have managed to fill most of the orders. Lots have been scarce on account of building operations.” The association has closed its office until next year.
