IMPROVEMENT IS NOTEO 111 EARLY EXCHANGE TRADE Secretary Mellon’s Optimistic Statement Imparts Strong Tone to Initial Deals, The WALL STREET JOURNAL NEW YORK, May 11.—Secretary Mellon's prediction of sound prosperity, free from danger of inflation, and the striking improvement shown by both the Federal reserve system as a whole and the local regional Institutions, imparted a strong tone to initial dealings and American Can, California Pete and General Motors moved forward at the head of their groups, continuing gains scored in the previous i session. First Hour Stocks continued to show a confl- j dent tone in the first hour and new: highs on the recovery were reached j Iby Baldwin and Corn Products, while ! California Pete spurted to 92%, up 9 : points from its low of the week. Ovetproduction in California and reduction in crude oil prices, responsible for its j recent slump, are gradually being righted as producers are cutting down ! on their production. Second Hour Some unsettlement was created in the late morning by another outburst of selling directed against the fertilizer which carried Yirginia-Carolina and American Cotton Oil to new lows. Those in the Street familiar with the industry were not surprised at the break as few companies in this group are expected to show very satisfactory earnings statements when the annual reports are made public soon. Noon Hour Trading proceeded in sluggish | fashion through the noon hour and j into early afternoon. About the only j features were special strength in the can stocks and rails and renewed pressure on the steel group which j broke Bethlehem to anew low for j the year. Both American and Con- j tinental Can were strong, Continental selling up 1% from the close and nearly 5 points above the recent low. Fourth Hour Rails came into their share of prominence in exchange dealings in the early afternoon under leadership or Pere Marquette, which was followed by Atchison, Southern Pacific. Southern Railway and Canadiana Pacific, j Bankers are beginning to predict that rails will find a ready ffiarket this summer and that this class of stocks will take leadership over industrials. ( losing Hour Renewed pressure on the steel group in the late afternoon depressed Steel „ common to anew low and started selling in other sections of the list, j Studebaker also established anew low for 1923 and recession of from j 1 to 3 points from the day’s best prices took piac eln Republic Iron and Steel, American Locomotive, j American Can and other industrial leaders. Local Bank Clearings Indianapolis Hank clearings Friday were 5d.7.37,000: bank debits were 56,198,000.

DRAIN CONTINUES STEADY DECLINE Liquidation Is Orderly, but Results in Weaker Prices, By United Financial CHICAGO, May 11.—Grains continued under orderly liquidation throughout the day on the Chicago Board of Trade and at the close displayed further- weakness. Unstable European and American conditions, together with weaker stock markets, played a prominent part in the downturn. The weakness In wheat was accentuated by a decline in Liverpool at the close, better weather conditions and a lack of export demand. The cash market was very dull and lower. Although under considerable liquidation pressure, com rallied slightly, based on continued light receipts and an increase in feeder demands. Oats weakened with other grains. Crop reports continued favorable. Trading in provisions was light. Weaker cables and a dull hog market also effected trading. Chicago Grain Table —May 11WHEAT — Pr-v. Open. H.sh Low Close, close. CHICAGO, May 11.—Liquidation in grains has been drastic and while it is expected there will be an upward tendency, grains are not likely to be rapid. A nervous market may be expected until crop conditions are more well defined, a prominent grain trader declared. About 70 per ’cent of the wheat seeding has been accomplished at Saskatchewan, while rye. oats and barley planting Is progressing slowly. A serious labor shortage continues to exists in many sections of the Northwest and is seriously hampering seeding operations. A substantial decrease in wheat acreage has been noted in the Northwest, while the flax area Is increasing. About 25 per cent of the Nebraska winter wheat crop will be abandoned and the condition of remainder premises a 67 per cent yield, the State department of agriculture estimates. The oats crop in Indiana looks much bette: since receiving moisture and should show continual improvement, an expert declared Local Hay Market Loose hay—Sl9ft2o; bales. $lB@2C; heavy mixed hay, $lB ft 19: light mixed hay, $lB ft 29.
