Airplane to Paint Smoke Letters in Sky Over City
“They shall splash at a ten league canvass with brushes of comet hair," wrote Rudyard Kipling a number of years ago and throughout the world the line was hailed as a bit of imaginative writing. But today the poetic fancy of the great poet has become a reality, with the whole sky as the artists's canvess and a high-powered airplane as the brush. Sweeping through space at a height of 10,000 feet these artists of the air will write, in letters a mile or more in height messages miles in length. They £ross their “t’s” with a line half a mile in length and dot their “i's” with a blot of ifhies smoke the size of the Statehouse. Indianapolis will have its first view of sky writing next week when Major J. C. Savage. British aviator, flies over the City as representative of the American Tobacco Company. In smoke letters he will write the words "Lucky Strike.” The size of
(OFFEE is economical because its strength, flavor and aroma permit more cups to the pound. The Fishback Cos. INDIANAPOLIS KANSAS CITY

the task may be judged from the fact that it requires 7,000,000 to 8,000,000 cubic feet of smoke to form a single letter. This smoke is generated at the rate of 250,000 cubic feet a second. At times thg writing has remained legible for forty minutes, at other times it has disappeared in five minutes, depending upon weather conditions. Great skill is required in the writing. as it is necessary to vary the speed from 60 to 140 miles an hour in order to form the letters perfectly and keep them in alignment. The type of plane used is a British, high-powered, single seat bi-plane, which was used effectively in the final stages Os the World War. Revere President Dies LOGANSPORT, Ind., May 11.— Word of the death of Newton Van Bandt, head of the Revere Motor Company, was received here. He passed away in New York.
