PROTEST ENTERED ON APPRAISAL OF PLAZAPROPERTY Sum Called Both Too High and Too Low —Dates Set for Hearing, June 4-6 have been set by Judge H. O. Chamberlain of Circuit Court as dates for arguments on reasons why an appraisal of $18,225 on the Delano-Cambridge Apartments, 15-17 E Michigan St., is too high and too low. County commissioners say that is too much to pay for the property, which must be razed for the war memorial plaza. The Delano-Cambridge Realty Company, owner, protests that It Is not enough. Mart indale Paid The price was fixed by an appraisal committee appointed by the court when the county started to exercise the right of eminent domain to get four pieces of property in the block north of University Park which it will donate to the memorial. The county Tuesday paid Charles Martlndale $202,887 for the property at 425-27-29 N. Meridian St., another of the condemned pieces of property. It was the price fixed by Circuit Court appraisers. Increase Sought The Democratic Club will ask for an Increase In the court’s appraisal of its property, 22 E. Vermont St. It was valued at $99,776.67, to which commissioners did not object. Shortest Railroad Makes Money,'Report Indicates
The author of “On a Slow Train Through Arkansas” would not lack for material had .he been able to peruse an annual report of the HuntingburgFerdinand Railroad in Dubois County, filed today with the public service commission. With its six and a half miles, it is said to be the shortest road in the State. The total investment represents less than $70,000 and the commission nounced they were satisfied with an appraisal of $231,600. No arrangements have been started to acquire the two churches located in the block. LOCK PREVENTS THEFT Thief Deserts Car When It Fails to Steer. A locked steering wheel is the reason that James E. Manley, 6105 Washington Blvd., still has his automobile today. Special Policeman Diener, of the Palace Theater, saw a man stop an automobile in the safety zone at Pennsylvania and Ohio Sts.. At 10:45 p. m. Tuesday, and then jump from the car and run. Motor Policemen Fisher and Schulz, investigated and found the car had been stolen from a parking space near where it was deserted by the thief, who left the car in a safety zone when he discovered the steering wheel was locked. Manley appeared and claimed his automobile while the police were investigating. Smoke Conference Saturday Prof. C. W. Cole, head of the steam engineering department of Purdue University, is chairman of a committee of five appointed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers to confer with Francis F. probably will have little cause to investigate Its annual net earning of $4,115.71 for 1922. Less than $60,000 of stock in the road exists. A member of the commission said the road runs backward just as far as forward —there are no turn-tables. The engineer does his own firing most of the time and shoots squirrels while waiting for connections at the terminals. He makes three round trips a day—when he takes a notion. Once in a while he has a brakema.i and, of course, there Is a combination .freight-baggage-express-passengor conductor. The company employs an average of twelve persons, including the lonesome engineer. At one end of the line there is a station agent. There are no switches on the road, because they don’t need any. PERSONAL contact is essential to the growth of complete understanding. When business operations and business organizations were small, the employer could know his employees personally and the merchant could know his customers. All had the advantage that comes from the intimacy of close, personal acquaintanceship. Misunderstandings were easily adjusted. Every man knew every other man as a citizen and as a friend and there was no suspicion 1 of motives. Today, when big enterprise is the order of business; when large accumulations of capital are essential to the accomplishment of undertakings of real value to the public, the several groups are denied the advantage of this personal contact Recognizing this handicap, the management of the Standard Oil Company (Indiana) has established a system of direct personal contact with the great body of employees and through them, with the public. The management maintains close, personal relations with the employees through the Department of Industrial Relations, where the employer and employee get together on common ground to discuss and' settle, in friendly conference, questions of mutual interest To promote still closer relationship, the Board of Directors, as a body, make frequent visits to refineries and to the field, where they meet and confer with the great body of employees. The value of this personal contact is reflected in the harmonious relations which exist between the Company and the earnest, loyal, hardworking employees, who thriftily invest their savings in the Company’s business and who have added interest in seeing that the Company’s customers get efficient service.
