HAREM LIFE AT SHILOH REVEALED BY CULT ‘PILLAR’ Former Officer in House of $ David Tells of Immorality. By United Prett i ST. JOSEPH. Mich., April 27.—The House of David was a house of bondage, witnesses today told Investigators into the religious cult. Stories of harem life in the supposed virgin house of Shiloh, home of ’’King” Benjamin Purnell, ruler of the colony, were revealed. The claim for celibacy and virginity made for followers of “King” Benjamin was regarded as a ,oke within* the colony, a former “pillar” declared. Benjamin Hill, the chief witness to testify In the probe so far, who was caught while fieehtg with Lillian Hannaford, revealed new and startling details of the midnight religious rites in the colony. Hill, once numbered along the seven “pillars” of the colony—the highest executive officers next to the

king—declared the revelations of Immorality had disillusioned many members of the cult. He said more than a score were waiting a chance to flee when he left with Mrs. Hanneford, his lifetime sw’eetheart, whom he could not marry because of orders of “King” Purnell. Hill said first word of conditions really existing in the colony was given to him by a 16-year-old girl he had married against his will. “She told me of the Immorality among heads of the colony,” Hill said. “I had faith in the teachings, however, and doubted her word. “When my mother died, despite the claim for immorality among members of the colony. I grew skeptical. “The group weddings were what finally convinced me that the wffiole thing was a hoax. “Girls were tricked into marrying men they did not love. The big weddings always came Just when an investigation was on. The baby brides from Shiloh were told that if they did not marry they would be forced to submit to examination by the Gentiles to show they were virgins and that this was against the faith. “Lillian and I finally decided even the chiefs of the colony looked upon the claims for virginity and celibacy as a joke and decided to flee.” Former Manager Held Dow T E. Welch. 23, of 219 W. Pratt St., was under arrest today on the charge of embezzlement. Detectives Stump and Samuels arrested Welch on a warrant sworn to by Floyd E. Payne, 2030 N. New Jersey St., who alleges Welch took $65 while managing a restaurant for Payne.
