SELLING CAUSES EARLY TRADE 10 TURN SLUGGISH Main Body of Stocks, However, Remains Firm — Bullish Factors Noted. PAN AMERICAN ATTACKED Concentrated Effort in Narrow Group Forces Recession in Two Issues, The WALL STREET JOURNAL NEW YORK, April 27.—Stocks vertstimulated in the early dealings today by the rise in the reserve ratio of the whole Federal reserve system and the drop of $15,000,000 In the rediscounts of the New York banks and United States Steel, Consolidated Gas, Studebaker and other speculative leaders gained fractionally on Initial deals. First Hour Trading was sluggish in the first hour with speculative attention confined to a narrow group of stocks. Fan American issues were subjected to renewed selling which send tho preferred stocks down from 2 to 3 points from the best price on previous trading. While selling was done in a few issues, the main body of etoekß, though relatively inactive were firm. Second Hour Announcement of another cut In gasoline prices by Standard of New Jersey was seized upon as a pretext for offering prices down in the second hour trading. But the efforts of pro fessionals were accorded Quite a different reception than when similar attempts were made following the first oil reductions two weeks ago. Instead of yielding the general list absorbed the selling and succeeded in establishing some advances
Noon Hour Trading proceeded in desultory fashion through the noon hour, but ; despite tile extreme dullne-ss the short Interests had occasion to become just as nervous ns the traders long of stocks during the trying time* of tho past two weeks. No selling pressure was noticeable anywhere in the list and impressive strength was displayed by a number of stocks which form ■ the backbone of the speculative structure. GRAINS TAKE DSP IN CHICAGO TRADE Break in Liverpool Market Furnishes Background, 11 U United Financial CHICAGO, April 27.—A sharp drop in prices on the Liverpool marltet caused grain prices to decline at the opening of the Chicago Board of Trade today. Wheat declined as a result of prospects of greater Argentine shipments, and rains in Queensland and New South Wales relieving a threatened drought. Corn strengthened after the initial dip. While weather conditions in the Southwest were more favorable for planting, receipts fell off. Oats was practically featureless with little change in prices. The 10-cent advance in hogs caused provisions to strengthen. There was a better Liverpool demand for lard. Chicago Grain Table At 11:45—April 27 WHEAT— prev Open. High. Low. Close, close. The calf market was slightly easier, though a few odd calves still brought Thursday’s top of $10.50. The bulk mdved from $9.50 to $lO. Receipts, 800. The sheep and lamb market, was nominally steady on receipts or 75. —hox*— £3 150 to 200 lb* $ 8.25 ® sil Medixim s.2o® 8.25 Heavy ...... 8.15 @ 8.20 Top 5.30 Iff?* 7.00® 7.50 Packing- sows 6.00® 6.50 ——Cattle— Ftw choice eteere $ 8.75® 9.25 Prime corn-fed steers. 1,000 to 1.300 lbs 8.50® PfiO Good to choice steer*. 1,000 to 1.300 lb* 8 00® 8.50 Good to choice steers, 1,000 to 1.200 lb 7.00® 7.75 Good to choice steers, 1,000 to 1,700 lbs 7.25® 750 Common to medium steers. 800 tb 1.000 ibe 5.75® 6.75 —Cows and Heifer*— Choice light heifers 5 B.oo® 9,00 Good light heifers 7.00® 8.75 Medium hifers 6.00© 7.25 Common hellers 5.00® ,6.00 Good to choice butcher bulls 4 00® 4.23 Fair cow* 4.00® 5.00 Cutters 2.75® 3.25 Canners 2.23® 2.50 —Bulls— Fancy butcher bulls $ 5.00® 5.50 Good to choice butcher bulls . 4.00® 4.25 Bologna bulls 3 75® 4.50 Choice veals S 9.50® 10.50 Good veals 9 00© 9.50 Medium veal* S (mi® P.oo Lightweight veal* 7.50® 8.00 Heavyweight veals ......... 7.00® 7.50 Common heav.es 6 00® 7,00 Top 10.50 —Sheep a °6 Lamb*— Cull* $ 2.25® 3.25 Good to choice ewes . ...... 5.00® 6.00 Few choice iambs 12.00® 14.00 Heavy lambs 11 00® 12.00 Cull lambs 9no Bucks 3.00
