GOAL PRICES DROP AS DEMAND FALLS IN LOCAL MARKET Cost at Mines Hits Toboggan —Operators Forced to Sell at Sacrifice, Coal prices at the Indiana mines have hit the toboggan. Operators explain that with the decrease In domestic demand and greatly improved transportation facilities it has become necessary in many rases for mine operators to sell coal below cost. “Buyers are playing a waiting game,” W. C. Kaiser, secretary' of the Ogle Coal Company, said. “Alines, for the most part, have been able to obtain sufficient cars for their needs, although there have been some temporary shortages. “In the East the transportation situation is not nearly as good as it is here. Prices of high-grade eastern coal are steady." Kaiser said the current prices at the mines are $1.50 for No. 5 screenings, $2.40 for No. 5 inch and a quarter lump: $2.15 for No. 5 mine run: $2.35 for No. 4 mine run. $2.60 for No. 4 inch and a quarter lump. $3 for fourinch domestic lump. $2.75 for No. 4 egg, $1.85 for screenings. These prices, he said are $1 to $1.50 a ton lower than the prevailing prices through the winter. Coal dealers advise that the consumer buy his coal now for next win ter, but here is the retail situation as compared with a month ago, before the prices at the mines broke: Indiana lump, present price, $5.50 to $7; price a month ago, $6 to $7.50. Indiana mine run. price now, $5.25; price month ago, $5.25 to $5.75. Bond Issues Approved Approval of the following bond issues was announced today by the State board of tax commissioners: Ripley County. Otter Creek Township road, $11,800; Green County, county unit road. $52,000: Scott County, I,ex ington Township road, $17,000. The board denied a proposed bond issue of $15,500 for a road in Carr Township, Clark County.
