OKLAHOMA WOMAN HAS HANDS FULL Runs Bank, Fourteen Farms and Does Own Cooking. Bii Timrs Special LEXINGTON, Okla.. April 6 —Time doesn't hang heavily on the hands of Mrs. E. M. Abernathy, whose fame has put Lexington on the map. In addition to doing her own housework, including the cooking, she is president of the Security State Bank here, owns and operates fourteen farms in this county and conducts a poultry ranch near town. And until she sold it just recently, she was president of the LexingtonYVanette Independent Telephone Company. “Women are just as capable as men. All they need is a chance," says Mrs. Abernathy. “While a. woman should be a help to her husband in his business, her home should come before her other interests.” Married at 16 to the proprietor of a general store, Mrs. Abernathy started a novel credit system by which coupon books exchangeable for merchandise were given for notes and securities of farmers. Mr. and Mrs. Abernathy later bought the telephone exchange and founded the bank. When left to conduct the bank alone six years ago, Mrs. Abernathy did not be come a figure-head: she is president in fact as well as In name and directs the making of all loans. OLD MONEY WAY BE REDEEMED BY U. S. U. S. Ready to Pay Cash for Civil War Currency. BY ROBERT TALLEY WASHINGTON, April 6. —Re member that old “shin-plaster" qurrency that your grandfather kept as a souvenir of the Civil War days—paper money for which we now use dimes and quarters and the like? Well. It’s just as valuable today as it ever was because the United States Treasury, which figures that there Is still about $2,000,000 outstanding, is ready to redeem it upon presents tion. “The Government has never yet de faulted on an obligation.” says R. G Hand. Federal commissioner of finan ces, "and It Is still ready to give face value for this fractional currency.” Two years ago the Treasury “wrote off" approximately $5,000,000 of this old currency after the Government actuary' —by some process known only to himself—had figured that such amount had been "Irrevocably lost or destroyed" since the war. The fox can run at a speeli of twenty miles an hour.
