STEP UP! UNCLE SAM HAS MONEY IN P VAULT UNCLAIMED Millions in U, S, Treasury Await Those Who Can Show Ownership. By ROBERT TALLEY WASHINGTON, April 6.—Uncle Sam is holding- more than $150,000,000 that he can't get rid of. simply because the people to whom it belongs won’t come forward and get it. The total represents outstanding Government securities that have already matured and ceased to bear Interest. but which have not been presented to the Treasury Department by their owners for redemption. Most of them originated during the World War. About $50,000,000 of the A’lctory bonds which were called for redemption last Dec. 15 are still outstanding and the aggregate holders are losing possible Interest to the tune of SIO,OOO a day, $60,000.000 in Stamps About $60,000,000 of the 191a War Savings Stamps that matured Jan. 1 have never been presented for redemption. Odds and ends of old bond issues, some of which were made nearly a century ago and have long since matured, contribute to the total. "Every once in awhile,” explained fcjVtUlam fl. Broughton, commissioner Ks the public debt, "we are called up on to redeem one of these old bonds. Men die and leave them with their private papers where, perhaps, they ore not found until years afterward.” Holders Are Inexperienced Delinquency In the redemption of more recent securities, however, is more likely caused by inexperience. Tired by patriotism, millions of persons who had never laid eyes on a bond before bought them during the Liberty loan drives. Naturally, there Were some who did know what to do with the bonds after they got them. If they have been destroyed by fire or otherwise. Uncle Sam will pay you still, provided you furnish satisfactory proof of ownership and destruction and give bond of double the value.

NO LIQUOR, NOT EVEN MEDICINE Plea Fails to Shake Judge From Imposing Fine. HONOLULU, T. H., April 6 "Therefore, drink no longer water but take a little wine for thy omach's sake and thine infirmities.' It is extremely probable that Totokichi Fukuda had never read the famous advice of St. Paul the Apostle to his fellow worker, Timothy. Nevertheless, the great apostle’s idea, ex pressed in Japanese and translated into somewhat halting English, was the defense of Fukuda. when arraigned before Judge John T. Deßolt In the United States District Court, on the charge of having violated the national prohibition law. “Your honor,” said Fukuda, through the court intepreter, "it Is absolutely necessary for my exist ence that I drink sake. I was brought up on it: my health is and has been for a long time impaired, and when I don’t drink sake I become ill and can do no work. Without sake I should he unable to live any longer. I admit that I broke the law, hut I know that if I went without sake ft would shorten my life, and I believe I have not long to live." The judge looked at the defendant, who. Intruth, appeared somewhat frail. “I am sorry for you,” he said, “but I must do my duty." And he Imposed a fine of SSO, but remitted the costs of court. And Fukuda went home to console himself In a steaming cup of—tea. BOLD THIEVES ROB JAIL STTNBURY, Pa..
