inflation Must Be Fought, I Expert on Finance Asserts
kgs By DR. LEWIS 11. HANEY, Bureau Rese.uch. New York University. <S '.W YORK, April 2.—As a result highs which afflict us as high prices, cost of living, BLges, taxes, and railway rates) and cwo disturbances (prices being so But of line and the European mess) we Katuraily find much social discontent. K.S the political pot begins to boil this discontent is apt to cause politicians to put out various catchy “planks.” Many of us can still remember that it was during a period of agricultural depression and discontent that the seeds of a soft money propaganda were sown, and It took years to stamp out those of free silver. We are now in for class discontent .and agitations of all sorts. Some will clamor for easy credit through Government actions others for low railway rates; others for relief from direct

taxes; other for reduction of wages by letting down the immigration bars; and still others for joining the League of Nations. Os course, too, some politicians will seek to extend the tipping evil by giving a bonus to those citizens who did their duty by serving in the Nation’s armies. What Are Causes? But what does our analysis of the causes show? What should be done to. bring fundamental remedies? In the first place, we must realize that as it is the large amount of money and credit which causes high prices and high cost of living, we must fight any further expasion in money and credit. "We must fight inflation. All schemes to extend government credit or to issue government bonds for purposes which are not clearly productive, should be regarded with disfavor by good citizens.
Such schemes in the last analysis mean either higher taxes or the issuance of more paper money, and, since we don’t want more taxes, probably the latter. To tha same end we should stand for government economy. It is time right now to remember that you and I have to foot the governmentss bills, And don’t forget that if you get out of paying your share of taxes, some one will have to pay too much, and that will cut down his savings and hinder industrial progress. Increased government expenses generally tend toward more government borrowing and an expansion of credit, which mean3 Inflation. Income Tax Best As to taxes, we should stand firmly against the propaganda In opposition to the income tax. Our analysis has shown that there is no way to escape heavy taxes now. The total burden cannot be reduced much. We don’t begin to pay what the English and French have to bear. Schemes like the sales tax, or others that will be put forward may seem simple, but they will merely raise prices and shift
an undue part of the burden to the poor. Mr. Harding says that railway rates must come down. Eventually, but why now? I ask why not just as well say that other prices, as the price of steel, lumber, gasoline, or milk, or labor must come down? I will venture to say that the lumber manufacturers are making good money, but that Is not yet true of the average railway. If we are going to have prices regulated by politics, the fellow who can get the most votes will get the highest price and at first may benefit thereby, but in the long run he will lcse his gain through the reaction of his high prices on others who produce what he needs. The interstate commerce commission should be strengthened and trusted as an expert non-partisan agency to regulate railway rates. Rates are not a subject you and I should vote about. To Consider Proposed Laws. Possible legislation regulating trade associations will be considered tonight at a meeting of the Board of Trade governors.
The VALENTINO MINERALAVA BEAUTY CONTEST is open to all. Attend the famous sheik’s open-for-ill dance and enter the contest. That's all there is to it. By process of elimination, starting with the entire list if entrants, the judges will reduce the number of Indianapolis’ pretty girls to six beauties. From the remaining six the judges will select THE PRETTIEST GIRL. ’The lucky girl will receive immediately a set of famous dolls, miniature reproductions of Mr. and Mrs. Valentino, presented to her by Mr. Valentino. But this is only the beginning of her fame and fortune. At the close of the Valentino tour, some time in lime, the winners from all the cities in which Mr. Valenrino appeared will be given a trip to New York at the expense of the Mineralava Company. They will see New York from the Battery to the Bronx, stop at the best hotels, visit the best theaters, and then as a grand finale i here will he a final dance in Madison Square Garden ivhere the National Beauty winner will lie selected by a 'ommittee of the world's most famous artists. The Grrand Prize Beauty, representing the pick of the prettiest girls from more than 100 cities, will then be given a contract for her appearance in Mr. Valentino’s first motion picture. This is the story, without frills or fancy, so if you believe you are pretty enter your name and you may be selected as the world-famous screen idol’s leading lady.
