MAKING FRAMES IS CAREFUL WORK Lyman Brothers Is Biggest Business of Kind in City. One of the most Interesting parts of the Lyman Bros, establishment, 223 E. Ohio St., is that part devoted to the framing of pictures and the con structlon of the frames. The fact that this Ann. which is not' only the biggest in Indianapolis hut one of the largest in the Middle West, carries about 65 or 70 per cent wholesale trade, enables the retail customers to take advantage of the almost unlimited variety of styles and linishes offered. “To the uninitiated it is almost impossible to conceive the different pro cesses that are necessary for the production of a frame," said Mr. Lyman. “There are three main steps of pro cedure, preparation of mould, joining and finishing. The finishing may be very complicated, depending largely upon the desired effect. “.Many of our frames are hand carved, the man who takes care of this having about 200 chisels of different shapes and sizes, in order to care for the minute detail involved. Many frame designs are carved In the block, then made into a composition mold, and the design pressed out and applied to (he frame. “Tlie thing that makes this . ahlishment different from small concerns of the same character is the care that s given in harmonizing the details of picture and frame. It Is possible for is to do this because of our unlimited variety of stock —we take a picture and carry it out to our various molding to find a frame that will bring out 'he high spots of the picture and If we have none finished that s ; *ms just right we construct one for it <.spt* dally All mats for our frames are hand cut —a job that necessitates Infinite care. "Anew thing that we are also very proud of Is the construction of mirrors entirely of glass The border or frame of the mirror is of engraved glass, resulting in a very decorative and effective mirror." SCIENCE IS AID TO EFFICIENCY “Too many manufacturers,” said Frank Osier, registered engineer with O. C. Herdrich & Cos.. 911 Merchants Bank Building, “compare scientific management with the spectacular es ficlency - plan of running through a plant and suggesting changes that can be wrought in a minute, but this is incorrect. Only an extremely poorly managed plant is susceptible to ‘efficiency’ treatment Others believe that scientific management is too slow

Realizing how hard it is for the average person to visualize something of which he has little workable knowledge, the Allied Coal and Material Company. 407 Odd Fellows Building, lias constructed a room adjoining their main offices, a comprehensive demon stratum plant consisting of several units. Different texture bricks such us smooth, repressed, vertical scored, chinchilla and mat finished, are com bined with different colored mortors in an almost unlimited variety of wall treatments. Other building materials, such a*s stucco, cement, and tile, are also demonstrated In different arrange nients As one cittern this exhibit he finds liimself in a cheery, convenient sizes! in attaining results. This also is Incorrect. “Ret us consider the facts first from the broad standpoint. A few plants throughout the country stand out its examples of good management. of satisfactory labor conditions, of successful operations. Examine these plants and you will find literally without exception that they have attained tins position through scientific methods of development. “Just now, however, what the man ufaoturors of today must consider is the development of plans In his industry and in his own plant that will get the immediate results. "Is there any plan undet the sun that can attain results so quickly as scientific method of attack and de velopment? By ‘results' we do not mean moving a machine here and there because e can see by super fielul examination that it will save labor, nor do we mean the speeding up of operatives by direct or Indirect threat of discharge We mean the really permanent :esulls which accrue from methods that eliminate un necessary labor, reduce waste, aid the How of work and materials, balance operations, eliminate internal labor friction, that In fact, actually reduce cost and Increase production per man. All of those can be brought about only by a sciontiflo method of attack and by scientific development."

sun parlor with Dutch Colonial windows and doors. From here he goes into the main room which is really like a court with a large bay window arrangement on one side while the opposite side emphasizes a very beautiful Colonial entrance, perfect in minutest detail. Whether one intends to build a Colonial house or a house of the Renaissance period, he can find some combination of brick and mortar in these demonstration walls that will be absolutely correct. Counseling as to kind and combination of bricks, and door and window treatment is one of the services given by this company. POLAR ICE WILL CONTINUE POLICY Indianapolis never n**od fror an ice famine for the cities' needs are adequately taken care of Every summer one reads of the terrible loss and suffering entailed in large cities because of an ice shortage, but it Is a singular fact that Indianapolis has never been obligated to en ’ire similar privation, "Our policy of keeping away ahead of the ice requirements of this city." said Henry 1,. Dithtner, secretary treasurer of the Polar Ice and Fuel Company, has always kept this city from bearing the hardship of am fee famine. Wo cannot predict the amount of ice necessary to run Indi ana polls during the summer season as that is dependent almost entirely upon the weather. But we have on hand at the opening of the season enough surplus Ice to take care of even the heaviest demand made by the hottest possible summer. "Lost summer wo prepared for a possible peak of consumption that was never even closely approached, much less reached, but notwithstanding tills, we are making preparations for a larger amount of ice for the coming season than at any time during our history. "At the beginning of the Ice season we wll! have on hand approximately

OWNERSHIP PLAN ISCOMPREHENSIVE Central Indiana Power Company’s New Plan Success, According to an official of the Central Indiana Power Company, the cus-tomer-ownership plan of the company is proving to be very comprehensive in scope. "Customer ownership, or the selling of stock by public utilities to patrons and the public generally in the locajif ie;: in which they operate through employes and local offices, is regarded in highest business and governmental circles alike >s the best solution yet found for eliminating friction between utility corporations and the public,” lie said "It used to be that these corporations paid little or no attention to the public’s attitude or interests, but those days are gone forever. Now. with customers and employes ; owning immense amounts of a utility’s securities, there is a vastly different feeling all around. “First, the corporation managers ; constantly operate and act in all I tilings to give the best possible service to the customers and are always , mindful of public welfare necessarily, 1 because of the new order of very close ownership relations between the cor poration and the public. On the other hand, the customers being financial partners in the business keep a watchful eyes, on the management, in : a sense, and at the same time are > alert, and active to prevent undue and ; unfair attacks and encroachments upon the reasonable right of the corporation. The utility management now - feels, os never before, the re sponsibillty and necessity of meeting divided obligations and all this means more strenuous efforts for wiser and better direction of the corporations' affaire “These facts explain the great success of the customer-ownership campaign being conducted by the Central Indiana Power Company which owns and operates Immense electric light and power properties, owned by the Joseph H. Brewer Interests in 10S cities and towns in central and north ern Indiana and located in twenty five counties.” •>7.690 tons of machine ice in our stor ng- rooms This amount will be a reserve supply, for the dally output of n Ur machines is adequate to take care of the ordinary summer needs. “At the south side plant. East Stand the Belt Railroad, we are erecting a modern brick storage with a capacity of 3,000 tons. This addition to the south side plant will give it ii capacity of 7.500 tons. Other Improvements have been made at various plants A fifty-ton capacity ice making machine Is being installed at the west side plant, and when this improvement is completed this plant will have a total capacity of practicably 100 tons Work will soon be started on anew office building and garage at Northwestem Ave. Both buildings will be modern and of ample size to take care of the demands that will be made upon them. Two new ice stations of the bunga low type will b constructed, making a total of twenty five such stations when the ioe season opens.
