GIRL KILLS RICH CONTRACTOR, THEN SHOOTS HERSELF Double Tragedy in Downtown Office of Wealthy New Yorker, By United Press NEW YORK, March 30.—Frederick W; Burnham, wealthy New York contractor, died today from a bullet wound inflicted by Helen Zeigler, who shot him and killed herself upon discovering he was married. Burnham lived with his wife in a fashionable residential section of Dob bin's Ferry. Miss Zeigler, who was 26, lived with her parents. The young woman had informed friends she “could marry Burnham at any time.” Sudden disclosure of the fact he was married is believed to have driven her temporarily insane. Miss Zeigler went to Burnham's office yesterday afternoon. She obtained admittance and laid in wait for the contractor for two hours. When i he entered she engaged him in whis 1 pored conversation and then shot him with an ancient Derringer pistol, turn ing the weapon upon herself, dying instantly. Burnham lived until today. TWO AiR SPEED RECORDS BROKEN Velocity of 240 Miles an Hour Obtained at Dayton, By Unit'd .Wtr* DATTON, Ohio, March 30—The world's airplane speed record was broken here twice Thursday within a short time. When the exhaust fumes cleared away, the laurels finally rested with Lieut. L. J. Maitlarf who fhw four laps at a rate of 240 miles an'hour. A few minutes earlier Lieut. R. L. Maugnan had set h!s second world's speed record in forty-eight hours, flying at 236 miles an hour. Tuesday Maugnan fled at 233.87 mile3 an hour. -The record made by the Frenchman, Sadi-Lecointe, of 233.01 miles an hour several months ago i3 thus shattered for the third time in two days. Maitland's new mark was made ever a course of 3,300 feet. ELEVEN MEN HELD IN RAID PoTiee Allege Craps Came—Pair of lWre and $2.38 Seized as Evidence. Ten colored men and one white man were scheduled to appear In city court today to answer charges of gaming and visiting a gambling house. Harry Prince, 24, colored, 732 Coulton St., was charged with keeping a gambling house. Tbe white man caught in the raid was William Carey, 30, of 329 Kentucky Ave. Lieutenant Anderson and his SQUad raided the Coulton St. address where the police claim they found a, craps game in progress. They said they obtained $2.35 and a pair of dice as evidence. Boy Charged With Theft 7 4-year-old boy was under arre3t today charged with stealing a watch from the home of Miss Era Armbuster, 832 Ashland Ave., Thursday. EASTERSHOPPING SHOWS GAIN OVER '22, DEALERS SAY More and Better Clothing and Millinery Being Purchased, Pre-Easter business In the clothing, furnishing and millinery lines shows a marked increase over last year, retail merchants agreed today. One men’s clothing merchant pointed out that not only Is the volume of trade considerably larger but the qualify of merchandise sold Is improved. Higher priced suits are more popular than tfie cheaper ones, he said. Women's dresses, tailored suits and capes show a phenomenal growth in volume" in number of sales. Capes are especially popular this year, merchants say. King Tut dresses are selling rapidly. Millinery business is booming, merchants say. Styles are varied. Hats are created for the taste of* the individual rather than according to any hard and fast style. Prices, although somewhat lower than last year, show a large range.
