G.O.P. RANKS IN COUNCIL BROKEN OVERPAY BOOST King and Thompson Rebel) Join Democrats in Blocking Broad Ripple Bill. LAWSON SALARY RAISED Twelve Traffic Code Changes Referred to CommitteeOther Bills Passed. A definite split in the heretofore solid ranks of the six Republicans in the city council was apparent today. The break occurred Monday night, when Republican Councilman John E. King and Ren fl. Thompson lined up with the three Democratic members in voting on three measures. It had been threatened since the last council, meeting, when King and Thomson voted in the same manner on two meas-, ures. The trouble arose over measures j raising the salary of Roy Lawson, a elerk in the municipal garage, from | 51,200 to $1,500 a year and appropriat-1 ing $22,000 to pay salaries of firemen j at the Broad Ripple fire station. Thompson asked more time on the second measure, which was granted. A vote was called on the first measure. Iternit Raises Objection Theodore J. Berndt immediately i asked, “Why pass this ordinance to raise the salary of one man when an j ordinance to meet the pay roll of Broad Ripple fireman is pending?” i Walter IV. Wise said that some time j ago councilmen had agreed to raise ; salaries of certain city employes, when j a list was presented by the controller : on recommendation of the mayor. He i said such a list had been presented, but no recommendations furnished. On the favorable'votes of Buchanan, Clauer, Ray King and Thompson the ordinance passed. Claycombe Calls I'p Rill Claycombe immediately called for second reading on the Broad Ripple ordinance. “Are we going to delay this ordinance any longer and cripple the fire department?” he demanded. “They need this money immediately to meet the pay roll at the Broad Ripple station, he asserted. King inquired if Broad Ripple had paid any taxes yet. Claycombe said it had. He accused certain councilmen of holding up the ordinance on acount of wanting appointments in the fire department. Clauer Admits .Vims Wilfiam J. Clauer. Democrat, rose to his feet. “What you said is exactly true, and what is more I’m not going to vote for any ordinance like this until I get these appointments,” he said. A motion for vote on second read•ng was lost on opposing votes of Clauer, Buchanan, Ray, King and Thompson. A third ordinance, appropriating 5t,500 for rent of the fire tower on the Merchants National Bank building passed, the same members voting favorably and the four Republicans, Bramblett, Wise, Berndt and Claycombe, opposing.
Three Others Passed Ordinance? passed unanimously: Transferrins SCOO in the department of -weights and measures for salaries; • onfirming a contract between the board of public works and Woodruff Place, in which Woodruff Place agrees to pay the city for police and fire protection; annexing a strip of ground along the Monon Railroad tracks front Thirty-Eighth St. to Fifty-Sixth St. These two ordinances were killed: Ordering the first alley south of Pleasant Run between Shelby St. and Senate Ave. paved over the remonstrance of property owners; permitting the Indiana Smelting and Refining Corporation to lay a switch from the L. E. & W. railroad tracks over Sixteenth St. An orinance making twelve changes in the traffic code was referred to the committee on public safety. Wise said more amendments, especially some permitting angle parking in more places, were to be added to the ordinance before it is called out. Under a complete revision to the
