FEW EDUCATIONAL , FILMS MADE BY MOVIE PRODUCERS Will Hays Fails to Develop Pictures for Pedagogs. Here is the educator’s side of the movie story. It w the concluding article of Randan's series. By CARL A. RANDAU. NEW YORK. March 16.—0 h. yes, there are a few so-called educational pictures. There is even a movie company which uses the word “educational” In its name. But its pictures—slap-stick comedies, etc. —are just as educational as the comic sections of the Sunday papers —and not one whit more so. When Will H. Hays started work for the Famous Pl&yers-Lasky Corporation and a few other large movie companies a little over a year ago the public was given to understand that he had become a sort of “Landis” of the screen. Hays made many speeches in which ho stressed the fact that one of the aims of his life was “developing the educational as well as the entertainment value and the general usefulness |of the motion picture.” * “Oh, yes, he practically told the school teachers that, America being a free land, they could go ahead and make pedagogic pictures any time they wanted to. After having talked about producing pedagogic pictures he passed the buck right back to the educators. That’s all well enough but not a single strictly pedagogic picture has been made by Hays’ employers since he started work for them.” “The chief reason educational pictures are not being made is that the people who produce pictures cannot serve both the interests of the schools and of the movie theaters. If they supply pictures to schools the theater owners will boycott them. If free shows are scheduled at the school, attendance at the theaters falls off, and the exhibitors suffer.” Os course, this statement may be subject to qualification. Strictly educational pictures are not apt to draw people from the theaters, but so-called semi-educational pictures will do so. Consequently, the real danger from the movie standpoint lies in pictures which have both entertainment value and educational value, and which may be seen free of charge at school exhibitions. The expense involved in installing projection equipment in schools combined with the absence of a supply of worthwhile films, tends to restrict the development of educational pictures.
